The Best Dash Camera for the BYD Sealion 7
Congrats on the new Sealion 7! Whether you’ve gone for the RWD Premium or the neck-snapping AWD Performance, you’re now driving one of the most advanced EVs on the road. But, if you’ve spent the last hour poking around the mirror shroud or scrolling through the 15.6-inch screen looking for a "Tesla-style" Sentry Mode, you’ve likely realized something is missing.
You’ve likely found us because you’re asking: "Where is my factory dash cam?". At The Dash Cam Guys, we’ve pretty much been deep under the dashboards of almost every BYD model in Australia. Here is the definitive guide to protecting your Sealion 7 - the right way.
The Sealion 7 Reality Check: Is the Factory Dash Camera Actually There?
If you look behind your rearview mirror, you’ll see a neat plastic housing. In overseas markets, this holds a factory dash cam. In Australian Sealion 7 deliveries, the hardware has been removed. While the wiring is usually tucked and taped inside that shroud, the actual camera module isn't there.
The "OEM Upgrade" Trap: You can buy a $99 "plug-and-play" module online (look for the white/cream Fakra plug for the Sealion 7 - the blue ones from the Atto 3 won't fit!). However, even if you DIY this module, you are still limited to basic 1080p footage, no audio recording, no rear coverage, and zero parking protection.
Relying on the factory module is like bringing a knife to a gunfight; it won't help you if someone hits you while the car is parked or if you need to read a number plate at night.
The 12V Myth: Protecting Your Sealion's "Brain"
Many new owners worry that a dash cam will "brick" their high-voltage battery. Simply put: it won’t. While the giant Blade Battery drives the wheels, your car has a standard 12V auxiliary battery that runs the electronics such as radio, interior lights, and surprise, any dash cam! If this 12V battery goes flat, the car won't even unlock the doors.
Our Technical Note: Most forums suggest setting your Low Voltage Cut-off (LVC) to 11.6V to get more recording time. Do not do this in a BYD. The Sealion 7’s Battery Management System (BMS) is sensitive; we recommend never using the the Low Voltage 12V system unless your chosen dash camera specifically features 'low voltage parking mode'. This is a relatively new feature, not many cameras feature it yet. For ultimate peace of mind - pair your dash camera with its own dedicated backup battery such as the VIOFO BP100.
Hybrid Parking Mode: The EV Game-Changer
As mentioned above, for Sealion 7 owners, we exclusively recommend dash cams with Hybrid Parking Mode (aka Low Power Parking Mode). Unlike older cameras that draw constant power (5W+) to record time-lapse, Hybrid Mode puts the camera into a "deep sleep."
- The Power Draw: A tiny 0.033A (0.4W).
- The Benefit: It only wakes up and records when the G-sensor detects a physical hit. This allows for weeks of parking protection without stressing your 12V battery.
- The Pro Setup: If you want "Always-On" recording, or free choice to use any dash cam Brand or Model, to skip the car battery entirely and use a dedicated External Battery Pack like the VIOFO BP100. It isolates the dash cam's power draw and protects your factory warranty.
The "Sealion" Installation Challenges
The Sealion 7 is a beautiful piece of tech, but a whole-hog 2-channel (Front & Rear) install has two major hurdles:
1. The ADAS & HUD: The housing behind your mirror contains the sensors for your Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keep Assist. If you mount a camera too close, you'll cause glare or sensor errors. We always mount on the passenger side, clear of the sensor windows but still within the wiper path.
2. The Hatch Grommet: To install the rear camera, the cable must pass through the rubber "elephant trunk" grommet at the top of the tailgate. If a DIYer just tucks the wire under the seal, your Sealion will leak when it rains. This grommet is a tight fit - it takes patience and the right tools to do it without damage.
Matching Your Sealion 7 to a Protection Pack
| Owner Type | Recommended Setup | Why it fits the Sealion 7 |
|---|---|---|
| The Tech Enthusiast | VIOFO A329S 2-CH | The gold standard. Features the Sony STARVIS 2 sensor for night clarity. Pair this cam specifically with the the ultra-low power HK6 hardwire kit (for a Pro Install) or VIOFO OBD Kit (for DIY Install). |
| The Rideshare Driver | Vantrue N4 Pro (3-Channel) | Includes a cabin camera to record the interior. Perfect for Uber/Didi drivers while still utilizing Hybrid Parking Mode with either the VP01 Hardwiring, or VP04 OBD Kit |
| The Nervous DIYer | OBD Plug-and-Play Kit | No fuse-fiddling required. Plugs directly into the OBD port (found under the dash near the hood release) for full parking mode power. |
The Warranty Myth: Will This Void My BYD Warranty?
Short answer: No. Under Australian Consumer Law, BYD cannot void your warranty for fitting an aftermarket dash cam unless they can prove the installation caused a specific failure. Many customers don't like the idea of splicing into factory wires - and we love recommending using "Add-a-Circuit" fuse taps or OBD kits. Your 6-year vehicle warranty and 8-year battery warranty stay intact.
