Does bitrate affect my dash cam footage quality?
Yes, and it is a big factor. When two cameras record at the same resolution, the one with the higher bitrate will usually give you the crisper, more detailed video. This matters most in the moments that count, like reading the number plate of a car that just took off, or making out a face in low light.
Low bitrate footage can look soft or blocky, especially when there is a lot of movement on screen. You may notice a shimmer or smearing on trees, road signs, and other cars, which are called compression artifacts. Those are the little glitches that appear when the camera does not have enough data to describe the scene properly.

Does a higher bitrate fill up my memory card faster?

To put that in everyday terms, one minute of that footage is roughly the size of a hundred high-quality photos. Is bitrate the only thing that affects video quality?
No. Bitrate is a huge piece of the puzzle, but it works alongside two other things. Frame rate is how many pictures the camera takes each second, measured in frames per second (FPS), and it decides how smooth fast movement looks.

For everyday driving around town, the difference between high and maximum is subtle. It becomes more noticeable at higher speeds on a freeway and under heavy tree cover, where the picture is changing quickly and the camera needs more data to keep up. If you want the clearest possible proof and you are running a large, high-endurance card, maximum is a fine choice. If you would rather keep more hours of footage on the card, high is still excellent.
Low bitrate in parking mode
Bitrate is also clever when your car is parked. Many cameras offer a low bitrate parking mode, which drops the data rate right down, sometimes to around 4 Mbps, so the camera can keep recording for hours without filling the card or draining your battery. You still capture what happens around your parked car, just in a leaner file that sips storage rather than gulping it.
