Every Dash Cam Accessory, and How to Work Out Which You Need

A dash cam out of the box is only doing half the job. The card that came with it will fail inside a year, it stops recording the moment you switch off the ignition, and in summer the windscreen reflects your dashboard straight back into the lens. Start With These Three

If you have just bought a camera, these are the accessories that change how it performs, roughly in order of how much difference they make.

• A high endurance SD card. The most important accessory you will buy and the one most people skip. A dash cam rewrites its card continuously for years, which is a workload consumer cards were never specified for. They fail quietly, so you usually find out on the day the footage matters.
• A hardwire kit. The cigarette socket dies with the ignition, so a camera powered from it records nothing while you are parked. Since most car park damage happens with nobody in the vehicle, hardwiring is what turns a driving camera into a watching one.
• A CPL filter. Cheap, and the fix for the single most common complaint about daytime footage. Reflected glare off your dash is polarised light, and once it hits the sensor no amount of resolution removes it.

The Rest of the Range

• Mounts and adhesives — 3M pads, electrostatic stickers and GPS mounts. Adhesive is what fails first in an Australian summer.
• Cables — rear, interior and telephoto leads up to 20 m for utes, vans and buses the standard cable will not reach.

Check Fitment Before You Order

Dash cam accessories are far more model-specific than most people expect, and the naming does not help. A VIOFO A129 and an A129 Plus use different rear cables. A Vantrue N4 and an N4 Pro use different GPS mounts. VIOFO's CPL filters are not interchangeable between ranges, and its A329 GPS mount comes in two versions that look identical.
