Dash Cams in Australia | Car Dash Cameras  |  4K Front & Rear.

Yes, in every state and territory. The only real rule is that the camera can't obstruct your view of the road - which in practice means mounting it behind the rear-view mirror, not in the middle of the windscreen. Audio recording is where it gets murkier, and the rules vary by state. Here are the state-by-state rules.

Only if it's set up for it. Parking mode keeps the camera watching while you're parked - catching trolley dings, door knocks and hit-and-runs in the car park. It needs a permanent power source, so you'll want either a hardwire kit or a dedicated battery pack. Plugged into the cigarette lighter, it stops when the car does.

Front-only covers you for most of what you'll see. But the single most common claim in Australia is being rear-ended - and a front camera is pointing the wrong way for it. Front and rear (2-channel) is what most drivers land on for that reason. Add an interior camera if you drive rideshare.

Honestly? Three things. Cheap ones die in Australian summer heat - supercapacitor models handle it, battery ones often don't. Parking mode will flatten your car battery if it's wired without a voltage cutoff. And the footage cuts both ways: if you were in the wrong, it records that too. None of these are dealbreakers, but nobody mentions them before you buy.

128GB suits most people - roughly 6–9 hours of 4K before it loops over the oldest footage. Go 256GB if you're running three channels or want parking mode recording for days at a time. The size matters less than the card: use a high-endurance card built for constant rewriting, or it'll fail inside a year.

Yes - we run a national network of independent installers, so you're not limited to one city. Pick your gear, find a pro near you on the map, and book with them directly. If you'd rather do it yourself, our install guides walk through hardwiring, fuse taps and mounting.

Three honest bands. Under $200 gets you a single front camera in 1080p or 2K - genuinely fine, and better than no camera. Around $300–450 is where front and rear starts, which is what most people actually want. Above $500 you're buying dual 4K, better low-light sensors and proper parking modes. Spending more than that only makes sense if you need a third camera for rideshare or a telephoto for reading plates at distance.

4K matters in one specific situation: reading a number plate that's far away, at an angle, or moving fast. For everything else - proving who ran the red, who changed lanes into you - 2K is plenty and always has been. The sensor matters more than the pixel count, which is why we lean toward Sony STARVIS 2 models across every price band; a 2K STARVIS 2 camera will beat a cheap 4K one at dusk every time. If you're choosing between 4K front with a 2K rear, or 2K both ends at the same price, take the 4K front.

Where the power comes from. A hardwire kit taps a fuse at the fusebox - cheapest, tidiest, and permanent, but it takes twenty to forty minutes and you need to find a fuse that's only live with the ignition on. An OBD kit plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash: no tools, five minutes, completely reversible, ten to fifty dollars more. Both do the same job of powering parking mode, and both should have a voltage cutoff so they can't flatten your battery. Pick OBD if you lease the car or you'd rather not touch the fusebox.

Yes, but power it differently. EVs and hybrids have a small 12V accessory battery that isn't built to run accessories while parked, and with no engine idling, nothing tops it back up - so hardwiring for parking mode can flatten it, and on some cars that throws accessory faults. The clean answer is a dedicated battery pack that charges while you drive and never touches the car's electrical system. On a BYD specifically, our Add-an-Ignition T-Harness gives you a proper switched source to wire against instead of guessing at the fusebox.

Almost certainly not, and be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise - unlike the UK, very few Australian insurers offer a dash cam discount. Worth a two-minute call to yours to check, but don't buy on that basis. Where it actually saves you money is the claim itself: clear footage of someone else being at fault is the difference between a disputed claim, an excess you pay, and a no-claim bonus you lose. That's the real return, and it only takes one incident to pay for the camera several times over.

Dash cams loop - when the card fills, the oldest unprotected clip is overwritten. On 128GB that's roughly 6–9 hours of 4K driving, or a couple of days of typical commuting. Anything the camera flags as an event, like a hard brake or an impact, gets locked and won't be overwritten in the loop. The practical rule is to pull footage off the card within a few days of something happening, because the clock is running - and use a high-endurance card, since constant rewriting kills standard ones inside a year.

They can ask, and in practice you'll usually want to hand it over - if the footage helps your case, it's the strongest evidence you have. Police can compel it in some circumstances, and the specifics vary by state, so get proper advice if you're ever in that position rather than relying on a FAQ. The part worth thinking about before you buy: footage cuts both ways. If you were speeding or in the wrong, your camera recorded that too, and you can't selectively delete the inconvenient bit once it's part of a claim.
