Dash Cam Adhesive Mounts and Stickers That Hold in Australian Heat

Adhesive is the part of a dash cam install most likely to fail, and it almost always fails in summer. A dark dashboard sitting in the sun regularly passes 70 °C, which softens the glue on a cheap pad until the camera droops or drops into the footwell. Adhesive Pads or Electrostatic Stickers?

The two are not the same thing, and the difference matters if you ever plan to move the camera.

• 3M VHB adhesive pads bond directly to the glass. Strongest hold, and the right answer if the camera is staying put. Removing one takes solvent and patience, and usually leaves a residue halo.
• Electrostatic stickers cling to the windscreen by static, and the adhesive pad then bonds to the sticker rather than to your glass. Slightly less outright grip, but the whole assembly peels off clean. This is the one to use on a leased or novated vehicle, or if you are not certain about camera placement yet.

Getting an Adhesive Mount to Actually Stay Put

Most adhesive failures are install failures rather than product failures. Clean the glass with isopropyl alcohol, not glass cleaner, because the surfactants in household products leave a film that adhesive will not grip. Fit above 15 °C where you can. Press firmly for a full 30 to 60 seconds rather than a quick push. Then leave it 24 hours before driving, so the bond can cure before it meets vibration and heat.

One more thing worth knowing: adhesive mounts are model-specific far more often than people expect. A pad that fits a VIOFO A119 will not necessarily fit an A229, and Vantrue's GPS mounts differ across the N-Series, E-Series and Sonnet ranges.
