VIOFO SD Card Guide: Which microSD for Your VIOFO Dash Cam (2026)
Short version: VIOFO officially recommends two things and two things only — their own Industrial microSD cards, or SanDisk Max Endurance. Everything else is a gamble, and they name Samsung EVO specifically as a card they don't recommend. For most VIOFO owners in Australia, a 128GB or 256GB U3/V30 high-endurance card is the right buy.
What VIOFO Actually Recommends
Plenty of guides tell you to "buy a good card." VIOFO is more specific than that, and it's worth reading what they publish rather than what a marketplace listing claims.
In their own support documentation, VIOFO states that only VIOFO original cards and SanDisk Max Endurance cards have been tested and validated across their multi-channel cameras. They go further and warn that "most other cards are not recommended, like the Samsung EVO card" — which surprises a lot of people, because the EVO is a perfectly good card for phones and cameras. It just isn't built for the write pattern a dash cam puts it through.

- Recommended: 128GB or 256GB — VIOFO calls this "a preferable and conservative choice"
- Range available: 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB

That last point matters more than it looks. A no-name 256GB card off a marketplace might be half the price, but when it fails at eight months there's nobody to call.
The Cards VIOFO Actually Tested — Pass and Fail
This is the part worth paying attention to. VIOFO's engineers took a sample of cards that customers had returned with faults, ran them in VIOFO dash cams, and successfully reproduced the failures the customers reported. They then published which cards passed and which didn't.

Two of those deserve a second look. The SanDisk Ultra is a genuinely popular, genuinely decent card — it's just a consumer card, and consumer cards aren't built for this job. More surprising is the Samsung PRO Endurance, which is marketed as a high-endurance card and still didn't make the cut in VIOFO's testing. "High endurance" on the packaging doesn't guarantee compatibility with a specific camera's controller and firmware.
That's the practical takeaway: endurance rating alone isn't enough. The card has to be endurance-rated and validated against your camera.
What Size Card for Your VIOFO Model
This is the part VIOFO's generic guidance doesn't cover — the answer changes a lot depending on how many channels you're running and what resolution they're set to. Higher bitrate means the card fills faster, which means more overwrite cycles, which is what wears a card out.

If you're between two sizes, take the larger one. It isn't about storing more footage — it's that a bigger card spreads the same number of writes across more memory cells, so it wears out more slowly. Capacity buys you lifespan, not just recording time.
Why the Industrial Cards Cost More
The VIOFO Industrial range is rated for around 120,000 hours of endurance and carries U3, V30 and A2 classifications. A standard consumer card isn't built to the same spec, and the difference shows up in exactly one place: sustained writing at temperature.
A dash cam does something no phone or camera does. It writes continuously, overwrites the oldest footage, and repeats that loop every single day — often in a car that's been sitting in the sun. Consumer cards are designed for bursts of writing with long idle periods. Run one in a dash cam and it will usually work fine for a few months, then start throwing errors.
Australian Heat Is the Real Test
A parked car in an Australian summer regularly exceeds 60°C inside. That's above the operating range a lot of consumer cards are specified for, and heat is where cheap cards fail first — write speed drops as the controller throttles, the camera reports a slow card, and clips start dropping frames or failing to save at all.
This is why we don't recommend cards that aren't on the manufacturer's list, and why we won't troubleshoot a camera fault until we know what card is in it. In our experience it resolves a large share of memory-related complaints immediately.
Six Signs Your Card Is the Problem
If your VIOFO is doing any of these, check the card before you assume the camera is faulty:
- Recurring "Memory Card Error" prompts, or the camera randomly restarting
- "Card Slow" messages, stutters, or missing segments in 4K clips
- The card reporting full immediately after a format
- Slow boot, or the camera sticking on the logo screen
- Formatting failing both in-camera and on a computer
- Files that won't play back or verify
Five of those six look exactly like a camera fault. They're usually not.
Try a firmware update before you replace anything
Worth knowing before you spend money: VIOFO ships firmware updates that specifically improve compatibility with a wider range of microSD brands and models, not just bug fixes and features. If you're seeing a "Card Slow" warning in particular, VIOFO's own advice is to update to the latest firmware first — a straightforward firmware upgrade will often resolve a compatibility issue and stabilise the card you already have.
So the troubleshooting order is: update the firmware, then format in-camera, then replace the card. Most people jump straight to the third step.
Formatting: Do It, and Do It In-Camera
Format the card in the camera when you first fit it, and again every four to eight weeks. Formatting in the camera rather than on a computer matters — it lays down the file structure the camera expects and clears the fragmentation that builds up from constant loop recording. It takes about ten seconds and it prevents most of the random errors people put down to a faulty camera.
