No ACC Fuse? Why Dash Cam Parking Mode Fails in Newer Cars
You have bought a good dash cam, you want parking mode running properly, and you have done the sensible thing: popped the fuse box lid, grabbed the circuit tester and started hunting for a switched accessory fuse. Twenty minutes later you have tested every slot in the box and every single one of them is live with the car off.
You have not done anything wrong. On a lot of newer vehicles, that switched ACC fuse simply is not there any more. This is now one of the most common install headaches we hear about, from DIYers and from professional dash cam installers, and it is worth understanding before you start pulling trim.
Quick refresher: why your dash cam needs a switched ACC source
A dash cam hardwire kit normally takes three connections: a constant 12V feed, an earth, and a switched accessory feed. That third wire (the switched accessory) is the important one for parking mode. It is the camera's way of knowing whether you are driving or whether the car is sitting in a car park with nobody in it.

When that ACC wire drops out, the camera switches to parking mode: low-power monitoring, motion or impact recording, the works. When it comes back on, the camera returns to normal driving recording. That is the whole system. Take away the switched signal and your camera has no idea what state the car is in.
The problem: newer fuse boxes, are growingly, all constant power
Older cars typically ran a proper ignition-switched circuit through the interior fuse box, so an add-a-fuse or fuse tap gave you everything you needed in five minutes.
Newer vehicles, especially EVs and newer hybrids, do things differently. Accessory power is increasingly handled by a body control module over a data network rather than by a mechanical ignition switch feeding a bank of fuses. The interior fuse box becomes a permanently live distribution point, and the actual "car is awake" logic lives in software. Add keyless start, drive-away locking and the various sleep timers modern cars run, and there is simply no ignition-switched fuse left in the cabin box for you to tap.
The entire BYD range is the clearest example we deal with. The interior fuse box is all constant power. There is no switched accessory circuit in there at all. The new Mazda CX-30 catches people out the same way, and it is not alone.
What DIY installers usually hit
The pattern is nearly always the same. Someone fits a fuse tap to what looks like a sensible circuit, everything powers up beautifully, the camera records, and the job feels done. Then one of these shows up:
- Parking mode never arms. The camera sees permanent 12V, assumes you are still driving, and keeps recording in normal mode all night.
- A flat battery. Full-power recording for two or three days in an airport car park will do it, and on a car with a small 12V auxiliary battery it can happen far faster than you would expect.
- No low-voltage cut-off. Some brands won't cut-off from low voltage as it thinks the car is still running, rather than off and parked.
- Random reboots. The chosen circuit is not truly constant either, but wakes and sleeps on the car's own schedule, so the camera cycles on and off.
Fuse tap or not, the ACC problem is the same
To be clear, we are big fans of fuse taps. Nothing cut, nothing soldered, fully reversible, properly fused. But a fuse tap only ever borrows what is already in the box. If there is no switched accessory circuit in the fuse box, no fuse tap on earth can create one.
This is the bit that trips people up. They assume the problem is the tap, or the slot, or the fuse rating, and they keep trying different circuits. The circuit they need does not exist there.
The options installers actually have
Run a wire through the firewall. There is usually a switched source somewhere in the engine bay. Getting to it means pulling trim, finding or making a firewall grommet, feeding a wire through and hoping you have not compromised a factory seal. It is time, it is risk, and on a car with a warranty it is not a decision to make lightly.
Tap the vehicles loom or a switch circuit behind the dash. Doable, but it means cutting into factory wiring on a modern, network-heavy car, splicing wires and soldering. Most sensible installers will not go near it on a new vehicle.
Fit a dedicated battery pack and skip ACC entirely. A workable answer, but the good packs still want a switched trigger to charge and discharge sensibly, so you are often back at the same problem with a bigger budget.
Give the car a switched ACC source it does not have from the factory. Which brings us to why we built the thing below.
Our fix: the BYD Add-an-Ignition T-Harness
We got sick of telling BYD owners that cutting into risky harness looms for proper parking mode, or meant poking through a firewall job, so we made our own solution. The BYD Add-an-Ignition T-Harness is a custom-made, plug-and-play Y-splitter designed by The Dash Cam Guys to be installed behind the OEM 12V socket in the dashboard.

It sits inline with an existing loom in the car that does switch with the ignition, and hands your dash cam or battery pack a genuine accessory-on, accessory-off signal. Factory plug on one side, your accessory feed passed straight through on the other. No cutting, no splicing, no firewall, no guesswork.
Here is what that means in practice:
- Parking mode arms the moment you shut the car down and walk away, and disarms when you start up again.
- Nothing in the factory loom is cut, so the install is completely reversible.
- It works with both dash cameras and dedicated dash cam battery packs.
- You skip the firewall entirely, which is the single biggest time and risk saver on these cars.
Confirmed BYD fitment
Fits all year models of the BYD Atto 1, Atto 2, Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Sealion 8 and Shark 6.
One exception: the BYD Sealion 5 does not have a compatible 12V socket in the front console for this loom. The rear 12V socket does fit, so it is still an option, just not at the front.
It is not just for BYDs
This is the part people miss. The harness is built around a common 12V socket connector, not around a BYD-specific quirk. Plenty of non-BYD vehicles with the same missing-accessory-line problem use compatible looms, and the new Mazda CX-30 is one we get asked about regularly that is indeed compatible.

How the install goes
- Locate the existing BYD loom behind the 12V socket that carries a switched ignition feed.
- Unplug it and connect the T-harness inline, factory plug on one side and your accessory feed passed straight through on the other.
- Run the switched output to your dash cam hardwire kit or battery pack.
- Set your camera to parking mode. It now arms on ignition-off and disarms on ignition-on, automatically.
The constant 12V and earth still come from wherever you would normally take them, which on these cars is the easy part. It is only the accessory line that was ever the problem.
Pro tip: before you commit, put a multimeter on the socket circuit and confirm it drops out with the car locked and asleep, not just with the ignition off. Some cars hold accessory power for a few minutes after shutdown, and knowing that timing up front saves you second-guessing the camera later.

If your car's fuse box is all constant power, no amount of testing slots is going to find you a switched ACC feed, because there is not one in there. You either go through the firewall, or you give the car an accessory source it never had.
