Vantrue Falcon F1 Review: 4K Front and Rear Protection for Riders

What does the Vantrue Falcon F1 record?

The Falcon F1 is a 2-channel camera, which means it records two views at once: the road ahead and the road behind. The front camera shoots in 4K, roughly four times the detail of standard 1080p Full HD, while the rear records in 1080p. That front 4K is the headline, because more detail means a better chance of reading a number plate when a car does the wrong thing and rides off.

The front camera uses a Sony STARVIS IMX415 sensor. The sensor is the chip that turns light into a picture, and STARVIS is Sony's low-light range, which is what you want for early starts, dusk runs and night riding. The front camera adds WDR and the rear adds HDR, both of which blend bright and dark parts of a scene together so headlights and shadows stay readable at the same time.

Will it survive the weather and the road?

This is the question that matters most on a bike, and the Falcon F1 answers it well. It carries a full-body IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating. In plain terms, IP67 means it is sealed against dust and can handle heavy rain and road spray, so you are not babying it every time the clouds roll in.

It also has a built-in G-sensor, which is a motion sensor that detects a sudden jolt and automatically locks the current clip so it cannot be overwritten.

The features that earn their keep

The Falcon F1 is screenless and controlled by a wired remote on the bar, so you can protect a clip or start and stop recording without taking your eyes off the road. It has built-in GPS, which stamps every clip with your speed, location and route, gold if you ever need to prove you were doing the limit.

It also runs dual-band Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so you can pull footage onto your phone quickly through the Vantrue app to review or share. Riders describe it as a set-and-forget camera once it is dialled in. What accessories should you add to the Falcon F1?

A motorcycle camera is wired to your bike, so there is no hardwire kit to buy, but two things matter.

The right memory card. The Falcon F1 records 4K and supports cards up to 512GB. A 4K camera writes a lot of data every second, and constant vibration and heat on a bike are hard on cheap cards, which are the number one cause of corrupted or missing footage we see.
