Who This Isn't For: The F1 is a hardwired install into your bike's 12V electrics, so it will not suit a rider who wants a camera to clip on and take off. If sharp 1080p front and rear is enough, the VIOFO MT1 is the more affordable pick and includes a 32GB card. The F1 suits riders who want 4K ahead.

Good to Know

• It runs on 12V motorcycle systems only, per the manual. The power cable wires to the battery and a switched fuse, and there is no plug-in option. A fuse tap for the yellow ACC wire is not in the box.
• Parking mode is collision detection only. It records when the G-sensor feels a knock, needs the ACC wire connected, and should be paired with the low voltage protection setting, because a motorcycle battery is small.
• IP67 is not a pressure washer rating. Vantrue's manual says never to hit the unit with a high-pressure water gun.
• There is no screen. Live view, settings and playback run through the Vantrue app over Wi-Fi, which starts on 5GHz and can switch to 2.4GHz.

Why Does a Motorcycle Dash Cam Need a Split Design?

A motorcycle dash cam splits the job in two because a bike has nowhere safe for an all-in-one camera. In a car, the camera, card and power all sit behind the glass, out of the weather, running from a socket. A bike has no glass and no socket, and the bars vibrate all day. A car camera cable-tied to the bars shakes its footage into mush, lets water in and has to be started by hand.

The Vantrue F1 puts only two small sealed cameras and the remote out in the wind. The recorder, the card and the Wi-Fi sit under the seat, and the ACC wire tells it when the bike is on. Vantrue recommends mounting the cameras on the bike's body rather than the bars, which cuts the shake further. The trade-off is the install. You wire into the bike's electrics and route two camera leads along the frame, and that takes an afternoon rather than five minutes.

How Does the Vantrue F1 Install?

1. Pick a dry spot for the main unit, usually under the seat. Keep it away from metal covers and do not mount it logo side down, because that is where the Wi-Fi signal leaves. Fix it with the 3M pad in the recess of its protective case, and add cable ties on a curved surface.
2. Mount the front and rear cameras on the bike's body, such as the fairing or beak and the tail, using the 3M pads or the ball bracket. Loosen the hex screw to set the angle, then use the calibration line in the app's live view to square them up.
3. Fit the remote on the bars, the front of the bike or the side of the tank with the buttons facing up, which Vantrue says protects GPS reception. Keep the speaker hole uncovered and the microphone hole out of the wind.
4. With the bike switched off, connect the red wire to the battery positive, the yellow ACC wire to a switched fuse and the black wire to the negative terminal or an earth point. Route every lead along the frame, clear of the steering head, exhaust and chain, with no sharp bends.
5. Remove the card slot cover, insert a microSD card and hold the record button on the remote for 10 seconds to format it. Then connect the Vantrue app to set the time, GPS and parking mode.

Allow an afternoon, most of it spent routing and hiding cables. The card slot cover is held by tiny screws, so do that step over a towel rather than the gravel. A circuit tester and a fuse tap make the ACC connection far easier, and our motorcycle dash cam install guide walks through the wiring.
