WOLFBOX X3 Review: 60fps and ADAS, With One Big Catch

The WOLFBOX X3 records the road ahead in 2.5K at 60 frames per second, and the road behind in Full HD, from a body small enough to hide behind your mirror. It is a two channel camera with driver assistance built in, which is unusual on something this size. Here is what it records, the thing most reviews get wrong, and the faults worth knowing about.

What does the WOLFBOX X3 record?

Two channels. 2.5K at the front, 1080p behind.

The front camera uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensor behind a 170 degree lens. STARVIS 2 is the current generation of low light sensor, and it decides whether you can read a number plate after dark. The rear camera covers 150 degrees at 30 frames per second.

There is a 3 inch IPS touchscreen on the back, plus four physical buttons that are handy in the wet. GPS is built in, and the Wi-Fi runs at 5.8GHz so you can pull clips across to your phone. Cards up to 512GB are supported, and the camera is rated for 12V and 24V vehicles.

The bit almost every review gets wrong

This is the question we get asked most: does 60 frames per second survive with the rear camera plugged in?

Yes. 60fps is not a front only mode. The official manual prints the complete resolution menu, and there are exactly two settings. Both of them run the rear channel.

  • 2.5K 60fps front, plus 1080p 30fps rear
  • 2.5K 30fps front, plus 1080p 30fps rear

That is the whole list. There is no third mode, no front only setting, and no way to switch the rear camera off to buy something back. There is no 4K mode either, and nothing below 2.5K at the front.

So the headline is honest. What you get with both cameras running is 2.5K at 60fps plus 1080p behind. The second mode halves the frame rate and keeps the resolution, so it buys card life rather than quality.

One open question, which we would rather flag than guess at. WOLFBOX says the X3 can schedule HDR, switching between smooth 60fps by day and vivid colour by night. That hints the two may not run together, and the manual has no HDR menu item at all.

Driver assistance is the reason this camera exists

WOLFBOX calls the feature set Smart Drive, and the X3 is the only camera we stock that has it. There are three warnings, and each one only arms above a set speed.

  • Lane departure. Arms above 60km/h. It reads the lane markings and warns you when the car drifts out of its lane.
  • Forward collision. Arms above 30km/h. It measures the gap to the vehicle ahead and warns you when it closes too quickly.
  • Stop and go. Arms at a standstill. It tells you when the vehicle in front has moved off.

Those speed gates matter here, and almost nobody publishes them. On a 50km/h suburban street lane departure never fires, and in crawling traffic forward collision sits quiet. Out on the highway, both are live the whole trip.

The alerts need a GPS fix. Speed is what arms each warning, and that speed comes from GPS. If the signal is weak the speed reading is inaccurate, and the warnings misfire. The manual names metal film on the windscreen as a GPS blocker, and metallic tint is common on Australian cars.

The camera also recalibrates Smart Drive every time you start it, and it wants two to three minutes above 20km/h to finish. A quick run to the shops may never finish it.

Do owners leave the alerts on? We have one detailed account and it is a fair one. The owner calls lane assist "nice and annoying at the same time", then leaves it on because their son is a new driver. Collision avoidance gets the same verdict, and stays on to stop him tailgating. That is one owner rather than a survey, and no owner reports switching the alerts off. If they wear on you, tap the Smart Drive icon or use the menu.

One thing not to confuse. The same menu holds a fatigue reminder set to one, two or three hours. That is a timer, not driver assistance, and it does not watch your eyes.

What the sensor buys you at night

Any camera looks good at noon, so night is where a dash cam earns its keep. The IMX675 is a Sony STARVIS 2 part from the current generation, and it gathers more light than the generation before it. In practice that means less noise under street lights and a better chance at a plate.

Being straight with you: we have not run our own plate readability test on this camera, so we cannot put a number on what it delivers in your street. Nobody publishes the rear sensor at all, so treat that channel as support.

Will it cope with an Australian summer?

The manual rates the X3 from minus 20 to 70 degrees Celsius, quoted exactly as "Operating Temperature -4°F ~158°F". Seventy degrees is a normal ceiling for this class, and it is a number an Australian car beats. Glass on a car parked out in February gets hotter than that.

WOLFBOX gives you that number and nothing else. There is no hot weather advice in the manual at all: no shade instruction, no summer note, no thermal shutdown described. Park in the shade where you can.

Two things work in your favour. The X3 appears to run a supercapacitor rather than a lithium cell, which is the right design for a hot car, because it will not swell the way a small battery does. We will flag that as thinly sourced though, since the manual never mentions it.

The mount is the other half. The X3 sits on an electrostatic sticker, with the adhesive under the sticker rather than on the glass. Heat cycling works away at that sticker, and one owner reports theirs bubbling.

What should you know before buying?

It is fussy about power, and this is the big one. This is a pattern rather than a one off, and WOLFBOX acknowledges it in its own manual, which warns that two in one and three in one cigarette sockets will not supply enough current. One owner could not run the X3 from the USB and USB-C ports in his Sierra, and bought three adapters trying. Another runs his happily on 5V through a good braided cable, and says cable quality is the whole trick. So use the supplied charger or hardwire it, and never run it from a splitter or a tired old lead.

Cards over 32GB need formatting first. The manual asks you to format anything larger than 32GB to FAT32 on a computer before first use, and it wants Class 10 or better.

On owner ratings, one honest note. The X3's own listing carries 4.1 stars from 187 ratings, and those ratings belong to this camera. But WOLFBOX also sells bundles pairing the X3 with another camera, plus a separate X3 PRO. Any X3 score quoted elsewhere may be pooling those.

Awards, and what they are actually worth

Short version: no independent lab has scored this camera. The X3 carries an Amazon's Choice badge, which is a retailer badge set by an algorithm rather than an editorial award. It also holds a sales rank, and a sales rank is a list placement that counts sales rather than merit.

Past that the pickings are thin. One roundup names the X3 for smooth high speed video, then credits it with a 1080p interior camera it does not have. Another X3 review carries no score and no sign of testing, and a third discloses that it was written by AI. Nobody gets to call the X3 award winning, and that includes us.

Parking mode, and which kit you need

Parking mode needs a hardwire kit. The manual is blunt: it "requires a hardware kit (purchased separately) in order to activate". A cigarette socket dies with the ignition in most Australian cars, so the camera needs constant power from the fuse box or the OBD port.

Your menu options are off, G sensor triggered recording, or time lapse for 12, 24 or 48 hours, and the time lapse records at one frame per second. There is no motion detection parking mode, which is worth saying plainly because people expect one.

The WOLFBOX USB-C hardwire kit fits the X3, confirmed on WOLFBOX's own listing for the kit. The OBD kit also fits and is the quicker install, with one caveat. Some cars cut power to the OBD port once locked, and if yours does, the fuse tap kit is the answer.

One inconsistency to know about. The camera stops parked recording below 12V, while the kit is rated to cut at 11.8V on one WOLFBOX page and 11.6V on another. The camera's number is the highest, so it normally stops first.

What is in the box?

The camera and the rear camera, a power lead with car charger, a rear camera cable of around six metres, adhesive, two electrostatic stickers, a trim tool, a lens cloth, five cable clips and the paperwork. There is no hardwire kit, and no CPL filter. Ours is cut for the mirror cameras and does not fit the X3.

The memory card is an odd one. All the WOLFBOX marketing says a 64GB card is included, pre formatted and ready to go. The official manual's package list does not mention a card at all. Three separate owners say a card turned up in their box, so on the balance of evidence it ships. Plan for a bigger one anyway, because 64GB does not go far at 2.5K 60fps with a second channel running. Our 256GB and 512GB high endurance cards both suit it, and 512GB is the ceiling.

How does the X3 compare to the X5 and the i07?

Against the X5. The WOLFBOX X5 is the three channel camera here: front, rear and cabin, with 4K at the front on a newer Sony sensor. The dividing line is not about pixels. The X3 has no cabin channel at all and no way to add one, so if you need footage from inside the car, no setting will fix that. Going the other way, the X5 has neither the alerts nor the 60fps. One surprise for anyone cross shopping the two. The X3 has the bigger screen, three inches against 2.35, even though the X5 sits above it in the range.

Against the i07. The WOLFBOX i07 is the entry model, and it also runs three channels. It is a step down in more than pixels though. Its front sensor is a custom part rather than a Sony STARVIS one, and it has no touchscreen, no driver assistance and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. So the X3 gains a Sony sensor, a touchscreen, faster Wi-Fi, the alerts and 60fps, and gives up only the cabin channel. Our i07 review covers who it suits.

Who should buy the X3?

Highway drivers and commuters who want alerts as well as evidence. Country drivers doing long stretches at 100km/h, where lane departure stays live the whole trip. Anyone teaching a new driver, which is exactly the case that owner describes. It is rated for 12V and 24V, so a truck or a caravan works too.

Skip the X3 if you need a cabin camera, or if you want voice control, because it has neither. Skip it too if the only power on offer is a shared socket or a doubtful old cable.

WOLFBOX X3 questions we get asked

Does the X3 still record at 60fps with the rear camera connected?

Yes, and both recording modes run the rear camera. The top mode is 2.5K 60fps at the front with 1080p 30fps behind, and nothing is switched off to get there.

Can I run the front camera on its own?

No, because there is no front only mode in the menu. Leaving the rear camera unplugged simply records one channel, and the front settings do not change.

Do the driver assistance alerts work at suburban speeds?

Only partly. Forward collision arms above 30km/h, so it works in a 50 zone. Lane departure needs more than 60km/h, and stop and go only acts when you are stationary.

Does the X3 need a hardwire kit?

Only for parking mode, because it records while you drive from the supplied 12V lead. Parking mode needs constant power, and the manual says the kit is required.

Does the X3 have a cabin camera?

No, and one cannot be added, because the X3 is a two channel camera. If you need to record inside the car, look at a three channel model instead.

The verdict

The X3 is the camera we reach for when someone wants alerts as well as evidence. The driver assistance is the reason to choose it, and the speed gates are the thing to understand first. On the highway it earns its keep. Around the suburbs, half of it is asleep.

The recording answer is the good news, and it is the part most write ups fumble. There is no trade off. You keep 2.5K at 60 frames a second with the rear camera running, on a current Sony sensor. Go in knowing three things, though. It is fussy about power, so use the supplied charger or hardwire it. It has no cabin channel and never will. And no independent lab has scored it, so treat the badges on the listing for exactly what they are.
