Who This Isn't For: The X3 is two channels, with no cabin camera. If you need footage from inside the car, the WOLFBOX X5 records three channels with 4K up front, and the WOLFBOX i07 is the entry-level three-channel option. Good to Know

• Parking mode needs a WOLFBOX hardwire kit, sold separately. There is no motion detection parking mode.
• WOLFBOX lists HDR, but its listings tie it to the 2.5K 30fps mode and the manual has no HDR setting. Do not count on HDR and 60fps together.
• It is fussy about power. WOLFBOX warns that 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 socket splitters cannot supply enough current, so use the supplied charger or a hardwire kit.
• There is no voice control, whatever some overseas listings say.

Why Does 60fps Matter More Than Pixels at an Intersection?

A plate on a car crossing your path is a motion problem, not a detail problem. Most buyers compare resolution and stop there, but at 30fps each frame holds more blur and you get half as many attempts at a clean one. A 4K camera at 30fps can still hand you a smeared plate on a car moving sideways across the frame.

The WOLFBOX X3 doubles the frames to 60 per second at 2.5K (2560 x 1440), and it keeps the 1080p rear camera recording while it does it. The manual lists only two modes, 2.5K 60fps or 2.5K 30fps, and both run the rear channel. The trade-off is reach and storage. A 4K front camera holds more detail on a car further up the road, and 60fps fills a card faster than 30fps. Storage is the tax you pay for detail, and the X3 pays it in frames rather than pixels.

How Does the WOLFBOX X3 Install?

1. Clean the windscreen, apply the electrostatic sticker behind the rear-view mirror and press the X3's adhesive mount onto the sticker, not the glass.
2. Tuck the power cable along the top of the windscreen and down the A-pillar with the trim tool in the box, then plug into the 12V socket with the supplied car charger.
3. Run the 6-metre (20 ft) rear camera cable along the headlining on the passenger side to the rear window, and fix the rear camera to its own electrostatic sticker.
4. Insert a microSD card. WOLFBOX asks you to format anything over 32GB to FAT32 on a computer first.
5. Drive above 20km/h for two to three minutes so the X3 can calibrate its driver alerts with a GPS fix.

The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the trim tool. Hardwiring for parking mode means finding a switched and a constant fuse, or using the OBD port.
