Get 4K Detail on the Road Ahead Without Running a Single Cable to the Back. The VIOFO A229 Pro 1CH Dash Cam Records 4K HDR From One Front Camera

Most dash cam footage that ends up mattering comes from the front: the car that pulled out, the red light someone ran, the plate on the ute that clipped your mirror. A rear camera is useful, but it also means a cable along the headlining and a longer install. The VIOFO A229 Pro 1CH puts the same 4K Sony STARVIS 2 front camera as the two and three-channel kits behind your mirror, with one power lead and nothing else to run.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: The 1CH records the front only, so it will not catch a rear-end crash or a car reversing into you. If you want the back covered from day one, the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH adds a 2K rear camera. If 2K up front is enough, the VIOFO A229 Plus 1CH costs less. The A229 Pro 1CH is for drivers who want 4K front detail with the simplest install.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • A Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8MP sensor recording 4K at 30fps behind a 140° lens, enough pixels to pick out a plate further down the road
  • HDR on by default, which keeps a number plate readable when headlights or a low sun hit the lens
  • A CPL-200 front filter in the box, which cuts dashboard reflections off the windscreen on a bright day
  • One power lead to hide and no rear cable, so the install is the quickest in the A229 Pro range
  • The same rear and cabin camera ports as the bigger kits, so you can add a camera later rather than replacing the whole unit
  • Quad-mode GPS (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS) and dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so clips carry speed and location and reach your phone without pulling the card
  • A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which copes with a hot parked car far better than lithium cells do

Good to Know

  • Front camera only. Rear, cabin and telephoto cameras are sold separately.
  • Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • The front records at 30fps. There is no 60fps mode on the A229 Pro.

Why Does Front Camera Resolution Matter More Than a Second Camera?

A front dash cam has to fit two lanes, the kerb and the car ahead into one wide frame. That width is what makes it useful, but it also spreads the sensor's pixels thin, so a car a few lengths ahead covers only a small patch of the image.

On a 1080p camera, that patch is often too small to read a plate once you pause and zoom in: you can see a white ute, not which white ute. The A229 Pro 1CH records 4K (3840 x 2160) on the 8MP IMX678, roughly four times the pixels of 1080p, so there is more detail to zoom into before the plate breaks up. HDR then balances bright sky and headlights against darker plates. The trade-off is storage. 4K files are large, so a small card loops over older clips sooner, and a 128GB card is the sensible starting point. Storage is the tax you pay for detail.

Top Benefits

  • Sharper front detail: The 8MP IMX678 sensor records 4K at 30fps so distant plates hold up when you zoom in.
  • Clear footage into the sun: HDR and the included CPL-200 filter tame glare off the road and the windscreen.
  • A tidy, quick install: One camera and one power lead, with no cable to run to the back of the car.
  • Room to grow: Plug in a VIOFO rear or cabin camera later and the same front unit records two or three channels.
  • Clips on your phone fast: 5GHz Wi-Fi and a direct USB-C connection move footage to the VIOFO app without removing the card.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.

How Does the A229 Pro 1CH Install?

  1. Stick the front camera behind the rear-view mirror, inside the wiper's sweep, and tuck its power lead into the headlining with the trim tool in the box.
  2. Run the lead down the A-pillar trim, clear of any airbag, and along to the 12V socket.
  3. Power it with the included car charger, or hardwire it to the fuse box with the HK4 kit if you want parking mode.
  4. Insert and format a microSD card in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and recording options.

The plug-in route needs no tools beyond the trim tool and suits a first-time installer. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.

What's in the Box?

  • Trim removal tool

  • User manual

FAQ

  • Q: Is the A229 Pro 1CH a lesser camera than the 2CH? A: No. The front camera is the same unit in the 1CH, 2CH and 3CH kits, with the same 8MP IMX678 sensor, 4K recording, HDR, GPS and Wi-Fi. The only difference is what else comes in the box. The 1CH has no rear or cabin camera, so front footage quality is identical across all three.
  • Q: Can I add a rear camera to the A229 Pro 1CH later? A: Yes. The 1CH has the same rear and interior camera ports as the bigger kits, so VIOFO's A229 add-on cameras plug in later, such as the RWC200 waterproof rear or an RF200 or RNF210 cabin camera. Turn the camera off before connecting one. If you already know you want a standard rear window camera, the 2CH kit is usually the simpler buy.
  • Q: Does the A229 Pro 1CH come with a memory card? A: No. You need a microSD card of up to 512GB. Use a high-endurance card built for continuous recording, because ordinary cards wear out quickly under constant writing. For one channel of 4K, a 128GB card is a sensible start and 256GB suits long commutes before the camera loops over the oldest clips.
  • Q: Is the VIOFO A229 Pro 1CH Wi-Fi 6? A: No. It has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is fast enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app. Wi-Fi 6 arrived with the VIOFO A329S series. You can also copy footage straight to a recent phone over a USB-C to USB-C cable, without Wi-Fi at all.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit. It powers the camera from the fuse box when the car is off and cuts power before your battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parking recording runs as auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate. Our A229 Pro manual guide covers the settings we suggest.
  • Q: Should I buy the A229 Pro 1CH or the A229 Plus 1CH? A: Buy the Pro if distant detail matters most. It records 4K on the 8MP IMX678 and includes the CPL-200 filter. The A229 Plus 1CH records 2K on the 5MP IMX675, can shoot 60fps in daylight with HDR off, and costs less, but the CPL filter is sold separately. For reading plates further away, the Pro is the pick.
