Who This Isn't For: The MT1 records 1080p at both ends, which is sharpest on number plates at closer range, and it is a hardwired install into your bike's 12V electrics rather than a clip-on camera. If you want more detail ahead, the Vantrue F1 records 4K at the front, and both have IP67-rated cameras per their makers. The MT1 suits riders who want dual 1080p, GPS and a card in the box.

Good to Know

• There is no parking mode. VIOFO lists none, and the MT1 switches off with the ignition, so it does not watch the bike while it is parked.
• It runs on 12V DC only and wires to the battery and a switched circuit. There is no plug-in option, and a fuse tap for the ACC wire is not in the box.
• Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz only, so copying long clips to your phone is slower than on a 5GHz camera.
• Cards top out at 256GB, U1 or U3 rated. There is no screen, so live view and settings run through the VIOFO app.

Why Does GPS Matter on a Motorcycle Dash Cam?

GPS turns a motorcycle dash cam clip from a picture of what happened into a record of where you were and how fast you were travelling. Without it, the video shows the other vehicle but not your speed, and the camera's clock can drift, so the time on the file is only as good as the last time someone set it. On a bike, speed is often the first thing questioned after an incident.

The VIOFO MT1 uses a separate GPS module that writes your speed, location and GPS-synchronised time into every file, and it can stamp the speed in km/h onto the video itself. The trade-off is placement. The module needs a clear view of the sky, so it sits on top of the bike rather than under the seat with the recorder, and the stamps only appear once it has a satellite fix after you start the bike.

How Does the VIOFO MT1 Install?

1. Pick a dry spot for the main unit, usually inside the seat, and fix it with the Velcro on its base. VIOFO's manual says to attach it firmly so it cannot work loose on the move.
2. Fit each camera to the plastic or metal mount, line it up with the horizontal reference point and tighten the screw with the wrench. Stick the mounts to a clean, grease-free surface at the front and rear of the bike. If a camera has to sit upside down, the app's image rotation setting flips the picture.
3. Stick the remote where your thumb reaches it without getting in the way of the controls, and the GPS module where it can see the sky.
4. Plug the camera leads into the yellow ports (align the arrows and twist clockwise to lock), the remote into the blue port, the GPS into the black port and the power cable into the red port. With the bike switched off, connect the red wire to battery positive, the blue ACC wire to an ignition-switched circuit and the black wire to earth. Route every lead clear of the steering head, exhaust and chain.
5. Insert the microSD card with the contacts facing the VIOFO logo side, switch on, press the Wi-Fi button on the remote and connect the VIOFO app to format the card and set the time zone, GPS and speed unit.

Allow an afternoon, most of it spent routing and hiding cables. VIOFO's manual recommends a trained mechanic for the wiring, because a wrong connection can damage the camera or the bike.
