Decoding VIOFO's Letters: W, WW, T, TW, TC and S Explained

You go looking for a VIOFO and end up staring at names like A329SW 3CH, T340TW 4CH and A229 Pro Tele 3CH. They look random, but they are not. Once you know what each letter and suffix stands for, you can read a VIOFO model name and know which cameras are in the box before you open the spec sheet.

This is a reference page, not a buying guide. If you want help choosing, head to which VIOFO dash cam to buy in Australia. You can see every current model in our range of VIOFO dash cams in Australia.

V3 Version three of a model. A119 V3

The trap: T330 is not a telephoto camera

This one catches almost everyone. A T at the start of the name is the series. The T330 and T340 are VIOFO's barrel-shaped, screenless T-series, the successors to the T130, and a plain T330 2CH is simply a front and rear camera.

A T after the model number means telephoto. So an A329T has a zoom camera, and a T330T has both: T-series body, plus a telephoto camera. Our T330 and T340 guide covers the whole series.

What does the S in A329S actually add?

The original A329 is now marked discontinued on VIOFO's store. Comparing the two spec sheets, the A329 lists three parking modes (auto event detection, time-lapse and low bitrate recording), while the A329S lists five, adding Hybrid Parking Recording and Low Power Impact Detection. Those two modes are what make the A329S so frugal when parked, provided it is paired with the HK6 hardwire kit. More in our A329S review.

What does Duo mean on an A229?

Two different things, which is why the name confuses people. There was an original VIOFO A229 Duo model, and many retailers also use Duo as shorthand for the two-channel A229 Plus and A229 Pro. The original A229 Duo is discontinued, so if you are shopping today, the two-channel model to look at is the VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH.

Worked examples

Here is the decoder applied to three real names, checked against VIOFO's own descriptions.

A329SW 3CH

A329S (the updated A329) + W (waterproof rear) + 3CH (three cameras). VIOFO lists it as 4K front, 2K infrared cabin and 2K waterproof rear. The third camera is the cabin one, because W already accounts for the rear.

T340TW 4CH

T340 (T-series with a built-in cabin camera) + T (telephoto) + W (waterproof rear) + 4CH. VIOFO describes it as a 4K front camera with an IR cabin camera, a telephoto camera and a waterproof rear camera.

A229 Pro Tele 3CH

A229 Pro (4K front) + Tele (telephoto) + 3CH. VIOFO lists it as 4K front, a 2K telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom, and a 1080p rear camera.

Is there a pattern to the numbers?

Loosely. Within a family, a higher number is generally the newer model: the A149 Pro Duo replaces the A129 Pro Duo, and the A329 series sits above the A229 range. It is not a strict rule across VIOFO's whole lineup, so treat it as a hint rather than a spec. The MT1 is VIOFO's motorcycle camera and sits outside these patterns.

You will also see -G on some Australian retailer listings, for example "A119 Mini 2-G". It marks the version sold with GPS, so check what is included rather than assuming.

Which letters do you actually need?

Whichever you pick, match the hardwire kit to the camera, not the letters. Our VIOFO hardwire kit guide lists which kit suits which model.

VIOFO does not publish an official naming guide, so where a pattern is loose we have said so. Retailer suffixes such as -G vary between sellers.
