Get Clear Front and Rear Footage Without 4K File Sizes. The VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH Dash Cam Records 2K at Both Ends on Dual Sony STARVIS 2

Plenty of front and rear dash cams save money at the back, with a small rear sensor that turns a tailgater's number plate into a white smear at night. The other trap runs the opposite way: buying 4K you do not need, then paying for it in memory cards. The VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH puts the same Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 sensor at the front and the rear, records 2K at both ends with HDR, and keeps the files a sensible size.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: If you want the most detail on the car ahead, the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH records 4K at the front and adds a front CPL filter in the box. If your car sits parked for long stretches and you want a low power parking mode, look at the VIOFO A329S 2CH. The A229 Plus 2CH is for drivers who want sharp 2K at both ends and more footage on every card, including owners replacing a VIOFO A129 Plus Duo, which it succeeds in our range.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • The same Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP sensor at the front and the rear, so the rear camera is not the weak link
  • HDR on both channels, which balances bright headlights against a darker number plate behind you
  • A 2K 60fps front mode with HDR off, which doubles the frames you can pause on in daylight
  • A 160° rear lens, wide enough to see across the lanes behind you as well as the car on your bumper
  • Quad-mode GPS (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS), so every clip carries its time, speed and location
  • Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and voice control, so you can take a photo or pull a clip to your phone without removing the card
  • A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which copes with a hot parked car far better than lithium cells do

Good to Know

  • Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately.
  • The front records 2K at 30fps with HDR on. 60fps needs HDR switched off and no cabin camera connected.
  • No CPL filter is included. The CPL-200 front and CPL-300 rear filters are optional extras.
  • No microSD card is included. Budget for a high-endurance card on top of the camera.

Why Does a 2K Dash Cam Make Sense at Both Ends?

For most drivers, 2K (2560 x 1440) on a modern sensor reads number plates at normal following distances, and it does it with smaller files than 4K. Resolution is only half the story. The sensor decides how much of that detail survives at night, in rain and in headlight glare, and VIOFO says a 2K camera on Sony STARVIS 2 often holds up better after dark than a 4K camera on an older, noisier sensor.

The A229 Plus 2CH uses the same 5MP STARVIS 2 IMX675 at both ends, with HDR on each, so a plate in front and a plate behind get the same treatment. The trade-off is reach. A 4K front camera like the A229 Pro keeps more detail on a car further up the road. What the Plus gives back is storage: smaller files mean a card holds more hours before loop recording writes over the oldest clip. Storage is the tax you pay for detail, and the Plus simply pays less of it.

Top Benefits

  • Readable plates at both ends: Matching STARVIS 2 sensors with HDR front and rear keep a plate legible in headlight glare.
  • More footage per card: 2K files are smaller than 4K, so a card holds more hours before it loops over old clips.
  • Smoother daylight video: The 2K 60fps front mode gives twice the frames of 30fps to catch a passing car.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs location, speed and time onto every clip.
  • Hands-free control: Voice commands start or stop recording, take a photo or switch Wi-Fi on while your hands stay on the wheel.
  • Room to grow: Add the VIOFO RNF210 cabin camera later and the same front unit records three channels.

How Does the A229 Plus 2CH Install?

  1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck the power lead into the headlining, using the trim tool in the box.
  2. Run the 6-metre rear camera cable along the headlining to the rear window and fix the rear camera to the glass.
  3. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it to the fuse box with the HK4 kit if you want parking mode.
  4. Insert and format a microSD card in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and recording options.

The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the trim tool. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.

What's in the Box?

FAQ

  • Q: Does the A229 Plus 2CH replace the VIOFO A129 Plus Duo? A: Yes. VIOFO no longer makes the A129 Plus Duo, and the A229 Plus 2CH is the model that takes its place in our range. It keeps the 2K front, moves the rear from 1080p to 2K, and puts a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor at both ends. If you are replacing an A129 Plus Duo, plan on the USB-C HK4 hardwire kit, because the A129 used the older HK3 kit.
  • Q: Is 2K sharp enough to read number plates? A: For most drivers, yes. VIOFO says the A229 Plus captures number plates at normal following distances, and HDR on both cameras helps keep a plate legible in headlight glare. Where 2K runs out is distance. A plate several car lengths ahead holds more detail on a 4K front camera such as the A229 Pro. For the car on your bumper or directly in front, 2K does the job with smaller files.
  • Q: Does the A229 Plus come with a CPL filter? A: No. Unlike the A229 Pro, the A229 Plus has no polarising filter in the box. The CPL-200 fits the front camera and the CPL-300 fits the rear, and both are sold separately. A CPL filter cuts the reflection of your dashboard off the inside of the windscreen, which helps most on sunny days and in a car with a light-coloured dash.
  • Q: Is this the same camera as the A229 Duo or the A229 Plus Duo? A: No. The original A229 Duo is an earlier VIOFO model that VIOFO no longer sells. "Plus Duo" is shorthand some listings use for the two-channel A229 Plus, carried over from the older A129 Duo naming. VIOFO calls this camera the A229 Plus 2CH, and it is the current model with Sony STARVIS 2 sensors at both ends.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4. It wires the camera to your fuse box and lets you set a voltage cut-off, so the camera switches off before your car battery runs too low. With it, the A229 Plus runs buffered Auto Event Detection, which keeps 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after an event, plus time-lapse and low bitrate recording.
  • Q: Can I add a cabin camera later? A: Yes. The VIOFO RNF210 plugs into the front unit and adds a 1080p infrared fisheye view of the cabin, turning the 2CH into a three-channel camera. With three cameras connected the front records at 30fps, so the 60fps mode is no longer available. If you drive rideshare, check your state's rules on cabin recording before you fit one.
  • Q: Will the A229 Plus cope with an Australian summer? A: VIOFO rates it from -20°C to 65°C and uses a supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery, which handles heat far better. A car parked in full sun can still get hotter than that behind the windscreen, and VIOFO's manual advises switching the camera off if the cabin goes above 60°C. A sunshade and mounting it behind the mirror both help.
  • Q: What size memory card should I buy? A: The A229 Plus takes microSD cards up to 512GB, and none is included. We suggest a 256GB high-endurance card for a two-channel setup, because two channels of 2K write a lot of data and standard cards wear out quickly in a hot car. Format the card inside the camera rather than on a computer.
  • Q: Where is VIOFO from? A: VIOFO is a dash cam maker based in Shenzhen, China. We are an authorised Australian reseller, so yours ships from Melbourne with an 18-month warranty and local support from us if anything goes wrong.
