Nextbase iQ 4K Review: Smart Features, Subscriptions and a 3-Channel Alternative
This Nextbase iQ review compares the Nextbase iQ 4K smart dash cam with the Vantrue N4 Pro S, and the two solve different problems. The Nextbase iQ 4K is a 4G-connected dash cam that can send alerts and live video to your phone, with most of that running on a paid plan. The Vantrue N4 Pro S is a three-channel dash cam that records the road ahead, the cabin and the rear to a memory card, with no plan.
We sell the Vantrue and we do not sell the Nextbase, so weigh that up as you read. This review is part of our guide to Nextbase dash cams in Australia. The Vantrue side sits in our guide to choosing a Vantrue dash cam.
If you are in a hurry
- Choose the Nextbase iQ 4K if you want to check on your car from your phone, and you are comfortable with an ongoing plan.
- Choose the Vantrue N4 Pro S if you want three cameras recording to a card, with nothing ongoing to manage.
Is this a fair comparison?
Only partly, and it is better to say so up front. The Nextbase iQ 4K has a front camera and a cabin camera in one unit, and Nextbase sells the rear window camera separately. The Vantrue N4 Pro S kit we sell has front, cabin and rear cameras together.
The bigger difference is the idea behind each one. The Nextbase iQ 4K has its own 4G mobile connection, so it can talk to your phone while the car is parked three suburbs away. The Vantrue N4 Pro S records to its card and waits for you to come back. We have not tested the two side by side.

How to read this table. The Dash Cam Guys has not tested either camera under controlled conditions for this article, and the two were not tested side by side. Nextbase figures come from the Nextbase iQ user manual, nextbase au and Nextbase support pages. Vantrue figures come from the Vantrue N4 Pro S user manual and Vantrue's product page.
Our product page sets out the warranty that applies when you buy the Vantrue from us. Specifications checked 5 October 2026.
Where the Nextbase iQ 4K wins
It phones home. The Nextbase iQ 4K has a built-in SIM and its own 4G link. On a paid plan that gives you Live View, alerts with images, a Remote Alarm and cloud storage. A card-only camera cannot do any of that while you are away from the car.
Parking features. Nextbase describes Smart Sense Parking as using radar as well as an impact sensor, so the camera can react to movement near the car. Guardian Mode and Witness Mode sit on the same plan.
What is in the box. Nextbase lists an OBD power cable, a hardwire cable with fuse taps, a fitting tool and a 64GB U3 card already fitted. An OBD cable plugs into the diagnostic port under the dash, so there is no fuse box work. With the Vantrue, the card and the hardwire kit are separate purchases.
The cabin camera and emergency features. Nextbase lists the cabin camera at 1440p across 180 degrees, against 1080p across 160 degrees on the Vantrue with all three cameras running. Emergency SOS is on the top plan and works through a paired phone. Nextbase lists Australia among the supported countries.
Where the Vantrue N4 Pro S wins
Three cameras, one purchase. Front, cabin and rear are all in the kit we sell. The rear camera in our kit is the RC09, which Vantrue rates IP67 waterproof, so it can mount outside the cabin on a ute or a van. Vantrue's manual lists 4K at 30fps on the front, 1440p on the rear and 1080p in the cabin when all three run together.
No plan. Everything records to the card. You pull the card, or connect over Wi-Fi at the car, and the footage is yours.
More is published. Vantrue states a supercapacitor, a working range of -20°C to 60°C, a 1TB card limit and the front frame rate. Vantrue's product page also names all three image sensors. Nextbase does not publish a frame rate, a sensor or the power storage type for the Nextbase iQ 4K. That makes the Vantrue easier to judge on paper, which is not the same as better footage.
A supercapacitor holds just enough charge to close the last file safely when power is cut. It is generally better suited to repeated high-temperature cabin exposure than a rechargeable lithium battery, although no electronic device is failure-proof.
What neither camera does well
Neither one is a complete purchase. The Nextbase iQ 4K needs the rear camera bought separately, and a plan for the features on the box. The Vantrue N4 Pro S needs a memory card and a hardwire kit.
And we have no documented night-time number-plate test for either one. So we make no claim about which reads plates better in the dark.
Can you use the Nextbase iQ without a subscription?
Yes. On the no-fee Solo plan the Nextbase iQ still records to its memory card, and you keep the app, voice control and text notifications. What you lose is everything that runs over 4G, including Live View, Smart Sense Parking and cloud storage.
Nextbase's Australian site lists three plans. We have left the fees out, because they change and Nextbase's own page is the place to check them.
- Solo, the no-fee plan. The iQ app, voice control and real-time text notifications. The camera still records to its card.
- Protect, a paid plan. Adds the 4G data, Live View, Smart Sense Parking, Witness Mode, Guardian Mode, Remote Alarm, image notifications and 30 days of cloud storage.
- Protect Plus, the top paid plan. Adds 180 days of cloud storage, automated incident back-up and Emergency SOS.
Pro Tip: Nextbase's support pages say the iQ is built in separate versions for North America, Europe and Australasia, and that the 4G features only work in the unit's own region. If you are looking at an iQ from an overseas seller, check which region it was built for.
Heat, parking mode and hardwiring in Australia
Heat first. Nextbase's iQ user manual says the camera is designed to function at a maximum ambient temperature of 40°C, and that some functions are restricted above that until it cools. That manual names the European and North American models, and we could not find an Australasian edition.
Vantrue's manual lists a working range of -20°C to 60°C. If your car sits outside through summer, read both statements before you choose.
Parked recording needs constant power. Nextbase's install guide says the iQ hardwire cable goes to a permanently live fuse, so Smart Sense Parking and Live View work with the engine off. The Vantrue needs a hardwire kit bought separately. Our parking mode guide covers how this works.
One detail matters for utes and vans. Vantrue ships the Vantrue N4 Pro S with one of two rear cameras. The RC09 is rated IP67 waterproof, and the newer RC18 is not waterproof.
Our kit has the waterproof RC09. If you buy from another seller, check which one is in the box before you mount it outside the cabin.
We do not install cameras ourselves. If you would rather not touch fuses, we keep a directory of independent installers. They are independent businesses, so you book and contract directly with them.
A properly completed accessory installation does not automatically remove Australian Consumer Law rights. However, a manufacturer or dealer may dispute coverage for damage shown to have been caused by the installation. Check the vehicle documentation and use an appropriately qualified installer when required.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Nextbase iQ 4K if the 4G link is the reason you are buying. If your car sits in a public car park all day, or you lend it to a new driver, an alert and a live view do something a card-only camera cannot. Go in knowing the plan is part of the package.
Choose the Vantrue N4 Pro S if you want front, cabin and rear recording for insurance and disputes, with no plan to keep up. It suits rideshare drivers who need the cabin covered. You can see it on our Vantrue N4 Pro S product page.
Choose neither if you do not need a cabin camera. A two-channel camera is smaller and simpler, and our best dash cam in Australia guide covers those. If you want three channels from VIOFO instead, look at the VIOFO A229 Pro 3-CH.
For more on the Vantrue, read our Vantrue N4 Pro S review and the Vantrue N4 Pro S manual guide. The rest of the range is in our Vantrue collection.
What we could not verify
- The front frame rate and the image sensor of the Nextbase iQ 4K. Nextbase does not publish either.
- Whether the Nextbase iQ 4K uses a supercapacitor or a rechargeable battery. The manual and nextbase.au do not say. A Bunnings Marketplace listing for the iQ states a supercapacitor, but we could not confirm that in Nextbase's own documents.
- Which temperature figure applies to the Australasian model. The manual we read gives two figures and names the European and North American models.
- The front and rear field of view. Nextbase's product page and manual table say 140 degrees, while the same manual's glossary says 125 degrees.
- How either camera reads number plates at night. We have no test record for that.
Still torn?

How we put this together
Retailer review and buying advice from The Dash Cam Guys. Nextbase figures are taken from the Nextbase iQ user manual, nextbase.au and Nextbase support pages. Vantrue figures are taken from the Vantrue N4 Pro S user manual and Vantrue's product page, and are manufacturer claims. We have not independently tested the Nextbase iQ 4K, and we have not run a controlled comparison between these two cameras.

Commercial disclosure: The Dash Cam Guys sells the Vantrue N4 Pro S, so read this as retailer buying advice rather than an independent laboratory test. We do not sell Nextbase and we have no commercial relationship with Nextbase. We have never had a Nextbase iQ 4K on our bench, so every Nextbase figure on this page comes from Nextbase's own user manuals, Australian product pages and support pages, and we have said which. We are not neutral. We have tried to be accurate instead. Where Nextbase is the stronger choice, we have said so. No brand paid for, sponsored or supplied anything for this review. We buy the cameras we review out of our own stock, the same stock we sell; we have not bought or tested the Nextbase iQ 4K. Vantrue specifications are Vantrue's own published figures and are manufacturer claims unless we say otherwise. We have not run a controlled side-by-side test of the two cameras. If a specification, a feature or a claim on this page is wrong or has gone out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
