Good to Know

The cabin camera uses the earlier Sony STARVIS IMX307 sensor, not STARVIS 2, and has no HDR. With the infrared lights on, cabin footage is black and white.
Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
All three channels record at 30fps, and three channels fill a card quickly. Budget for a 256GB or 512GB card, which is not included.

Why Does a Cabin Camera With Infrared Matter?

A cabin camera records what front and rear cameras cannot: who was in the car, what they did and what was said. For anyone who carries passengers, whether that is paid work, a fleet vehicle or a car full of teenagers, that is often where the dispute actually sits.

The catch is light. Plenty of late trips end after dark, and a cabin at night is close to pitch black, so an ordinary interior lens records a dark rectangle with the odd streetlight sweeping through. The A229 Pro 3CH cabin camera carries four infrared LEDs that light the cabin with infrared the eye cannot see, and in Auto mode the camera switches them on when the light drops. The trade-off is colour. Infrared footage is black and white, and the cabin sensor is an older STARVIS chip rather than STARVIS 2, so it shows people and actions clearly rather than fine detail. How Does the A229 Pro 3CH Install?

Stick the front camera behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its power lead into the headlining, using the trim tool in the box.
Fix the cabin camera to the windscreen beside the front unit, aimed back into the cabin, and connect it with the 1-metre interior camera cable.
Run the 6-metre rear cable along the headlining and down to the rear window, then fix the rear camera to the glass.
Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it to the fuse box with the HK4 kit if you want parking mode.
Insert and format a microSD card, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS, cabin camera and infrared options.

Turn the camera off before you plug or unplug the rear or cabin camera. The cabin camera adds one more short cable to hide, so check a night clip in the app before you tidy everything away.

Q: What does the cabin camera in the A229 Pro 3CH record? A: The inside of the car at 1080p, through a 150° lens aimed back from the windscreen, with sound from the front unit's microphone. Four infrared LEDs light the cabin at night, and in Auto mode they switch on when it gets dark. With the infrared on, the cabin footage is black and white, which is normal for any infrared interior camera.
Q: Does the cabin camera use a STARVIS 2 sensor? A: No, and it is an easy assumption to make. The front and rear cameras use Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, but the included cabin camera uses the earlier Sony STARVIS IMX307. It is fine for showing who is in the car and what they are doing. If you want a wider 210° STARVIS 2 cabin view, the VIOFO RNF210 cabin camera also fits the A229 Pro.
Q: Does the front drop below 4K when all three cameras are connected? A: No. In the default 3-channel mode the front records 4K, the rear 2K and the cabin 1080p, all at 30fps. There is no 60fps option on the A229 Pro in any mode. If you would rather record the rear at 1080p to save card space, that mode is available in the settings.
Q: Can I use the A229 Pro 3CH for Uber or DiDi? A: You can, but check the rules for your state before you switch the cabin camera on. Victoria and Queensland transport rules restrict cameras that record inside rideshare cars, and our rideshare dash cam laws guide on the DCG blog explains what applies. The cabin camera can be set to Off, or to record only while parked, from the menu or the VIOFO app.
Q: Which hardwire kit does the A229 Pro 3CH need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit. It powers the camera from the fuse box when the car is off and cuts power before your battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parking recording runs as auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate. For long stretches parked, a VIOFO battery pack takes the load off the car battery.
Q: What size memory card should I get for three channels? A: Treat 256GB as the minimum and 512GB as the sensible size if you drive full shifts. Three channels of 4K, 2K and 1080p write a lot of data, so a small card loops over older clips quickly. Use a high-endurance card such as the VIOFO Industrial range, because ordinary cards are the most common cause of lost footage.
Q: Can I turn the cabin camera off when I do not need it? A: Yes. The Interior Camera setting has four options: Off, On, Only On while Driving and Only On while Parking. You can change it on the camera or in the VIOFO app, so a private trip does not have to be recorded inside the car. Turn the camera off before unplugging the cabin camera cable.
