Good to Know

• Parking mode needs constant power from a Vantrue hardwire kit, such as the Vantrue VP05, sold separately. Vantrue warns that other brands' kits may not trigger parking mode correctly.
• Vantrue makes the N4 Pro S rear camera in two versions, both 2.5K. The RC09 is IP67 rated for mounting outside. The newer RC18 is not waterproof and mounts inside the rear window. Check which one is in your box before you mount anything outside, and ask us if you are unsure.
• Every mode records at 30fps, and the manual lists HDR for the front and cabin cameras, not the rear.

Why Does a 2.5K Rear Camera Matter on a Three-Channel Dash Cam?

A 2.5K rear camera matters because the plate you most often need is the one behind you, on the car that ran into you at the lights. A dash cam processor can only handle so much video at once, so most multi-channel cameras give the front the detail and record the rear and cabin at 1080p. A plate a few car lengths back, at night, under headlights, can end up as a handful of unreadable pixels.

The Vantrue N4 Pro S records the rear at 2560 x 1440, about 78 per cent more pixels than 1080p, while the front stays at 4K and the cabin at 1080p. The trade-off is data and heat. Three streams fill a memory card quickly and the camera draws 7W, so a high endurance card and a hardwire kit with a voltage cut-off matter more than on a single camera.

How Does the Vantrue N4 Pro S Install?

1. Clean the glass, fit the electrostatic sticker beside the rear-view mirror, and stick the GPS mount on it using the adhesion promoter in the box. Check the front and cabin views on the 3.19-inch screen before you press it down.
2. Stick the rear camera near the centre of the rear window, inside the glass and clear of the demister lines. Only the IP67 RC09 version goes outside, and Vantrue says to seal its cable joint with heat shrink tubing.
3. Run the rear camera cable along the headlining to the front using the pry tool, and plug it into the USB-C port the manual shows for the rear camera. The other USB-C port is for power only and will not run the rear camera.
4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with a Vantrue kit for parking mode. Then insert and format a microSD card and connect the Vantrue app to set the time zone and parking mode.

The rear cable run is the longest part of the job. In a van, a wagon or a ute with a canopy, the Vantrue 9m rear camera cable fits the N4 Pro S. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.
