Dash Cam Hardwire Kits: Parking Mode, and a Cable You Never See Again

A dash cam hardwire kit connects your camera directly to the vehicle's electrical system instead of the cigarette lighter socket. That does two things. It hides every cable behind the trim for a factory finish, and it keeps the camera powered once the ignition is off, so it is still recording when someone reverses into you in a car park and drives away.

That second part is the whole point. Without a hardwire kit, most dash cams stop the moment you turn the key, because on the overwhelming majority of Australian vehicles the accessory socket is switched with the ignition. A camera that only records while you are driving misses the incidents you are least likely to have a witness for.

Three Ways to Power a Dash Cam Permanently

This is the decision that actually matters, and it is not about brand. Pick the route that suits your car and your comfort level, then pick the kit for your camera.

  • Fuse tap kits wire into a spare or piggy-backed fuse in the fuse box. The tidiest and most reliable result, and the entry point of the range. You need to find a switched fuse and an earth point, which takes a circuit tester and about half an hour.
  • OBD kits plug straight into the diagnostic port under the dash. No fuse box, no tools, no earth strap. Fit them in about five minutes. The OBD port sits low on the dash, so the cable run is slightly longer.
  • Mirror tap adapters take power from the auto-dimming mirror harness. The cleanest-looking install of the lot, but the important caveat is below.

Most kits in this collection supply constant power with a low-voltage cut-off, which is what parking mode needs. Most Dongar mirror adapters, including the Classic, are the exception. They are ignition-switched only. They give you a beautifully hidden install and they free up your 12V socket, but the camera will not record while the car is parked. The exception is the Dongar PRO, which adds timed and continuous parking modes with an automatic low-voltage cut-off, on supported vehicles. If parking mode is the reason you are here, choose a fuse tap kit, an OBD kit or the PRO.

Battery Protection Is Not Optional

A camera drawing power for days will flatten a battery, and a flat battery in a modern car is an expensive afternoon. Every fuse tap and OBD kit here has a low-voltage cut-off that shuts the camera down before the battery drops too far to start the engine. Several let you set the threshold yourself, and a few add a parking timer so the camera stops after a set number of hours regardless of voltage.

If your car sits for a week at a time, or you have a battery that is a few years old, set a conservative cut-off. For most petrol and diesel vehicles, 12.2V to 12.3V is the right range, and 12.4V suits short-trip cars that never fully charge between drives.

EVs and hybrids need a different conversation. The 12V accessory battery in these vehicles is small, and the way it is charged and managed has very little in common with a conventional starter battery. Generic cut-off advice does not transfer, and the architecture varies a great deal between models. Talk to us before you settle on a threshold for an EV or hybrid, or sidestep the question entirely with a dedicated battery pack that leaves the vehicle's own system out of it.

12V and 24V, Cars Through to Trucks

Every kit here handles 12V passenger vehicles. Most also accept 24V, which covers light trucks, heavy rigids and a good deal of plant. Check the input range on the product page if you are fitting to anything other than a car or ute, and ask us if you are unsure.

Matching a Kit to Your Camera

Hardwire kits are not universal. The connector has to match your camera's power input, and the kits are grouped that way:

  • USB-C: Current VIOFO, Vantrue and WOLFBOX models.
  • Mini-USB: Older VIOFO cameras including the A119 V3 and the A129 range.
  • Micro-USB: Older Vantrue and budget cameras.

Buying the wrong connector is the most common mistake we see. If your camera is not obviously current-generation, check the port before you order, or send us the model and we will match it.

Can You Fit One Yourself?

Yes, and most of our customers do. An OBD kit is genuinely a five-minute job with no tools. A fuse tap install is a first-time-DIY job if you are comfortable pulling a trim panel and using a circuit tester, and you will want a plastic pry tool so you do not mark the plastics. If you would rather not, we do not install cameras ourselves, but we keep a directory of independent installers around the country and you book directly with them.
