Who This Isn't For: If you need to read the plate of the car behind you, the N4 Pro's 1080p rear is its limit. The Vantrue N4 Pro S records the rear at 1440p (2.5K). If you want the back seat covered too, the Vantrue N5S adds a second cabin camera. The N4 Pro suits rideshare and family drivers who want the sharpest front view.

Good to Know

• Parking mode needs constant power from a Vantrue hardwire kit, such as the Vantrue VP05, sold separately. Vantrue warns that other brands' kits may not trigger parking mode correctly.
• Vantrue's manual fits the included rear camera to the inside of the rear window. To mount a rear camera outside on a canopy or tailgate, the Vantrue RC07 IP67 rear camera fits the N4 Pro and is sold separately.
• Every mode records at 30fps. There is no 60fps option at any resolution.

Why Does the Vantrue N4 Pro Keep 4K With All Three Cameras Running?

The Vantrue N4 Pro keeps 4K because its top mode records 2160P front, 1080P cabin and 1080P rear at the same time. A dash cam processor can only handle so much video at once, so most multi-channel cameras share it out by cutting the front camera back when the extra cameras switch on. The front is the camera that reads a number plate or a street sign, so that cut costs you the detail you most often need.

The N4 Pro gives the processor enough headroom to keep the front at full resolution, and when you do step down it drops the cabin and rear to 720P before the front gives anything up. The trade-off is data and heat. Three streams fill a memory card quickly, and the camera draws 6W, so a high endurance card and sensible hardwire settings matter more than on a single camera.

How Does the Vantrue N4 Pro Install?

1. Clean the glass, fit the electrostatic sticker beside the rear-view mirror, and stick the GPS mount on it using the bracket adhesion promoter in the box. Check the front and cabin views on the 3.19-inch screen before you press it down.
2. Stick the rear camera near the centre of the rear window, clear of the demister lines.
3. Run the 6m rear camera cable along the headlining to the front, using the pry tool, and plug it into the rear camera port on the main unit.
4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with a Vantrue kit for parking mode. Then insert and format a microSD card and connect the Vantrue app to set the time zone and parking mode.

The rear cable run is the longest part of the job. In a van, a wagon or a ute with a canopy, the Vantrue 9m rear camera cable fits the N4 Pro. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.
