Good to Know

• Parking mode needs constant power from a hardwire kit, such as the Vantrue VP01, sold separately. Vantrue's manual asks for its own kit, because other brands' kits may not switch parking mode correctly.
• The rear camera records 1080p on a 2MP Sony STARVIS sensor, per Vantrue. It is not the STARVIS 2 sensor used up front.
• The rear module mounts inside the rear window. Vantrue publishes no IP rating for it, so it is not designed to be mounted outside the car.

Why Does the Vantrue N5 Use Two Cabin Cameras?

The Vantrue N5 uses two cabin cameras because one camera at the windscreen cannot see the whole cabin well. A single interior camera sits beside the mirror and looks back past the front seats. It records the driver and front passenger clearly, but the back seat is further away and partly hidden behind the headrests.

The N5 puts a second cabin camera in the rear module, on the back window, looking forward over the rear seats. Each cabin camera has infrared LEDs, so both rows stay visible at night. The trade-off is the install: the rear module needs a cable run to the back window, and four channels fill a card faster than two. In Victoria and Queensland, check the rideshare camera rules before recording passengers.

How Is the Vantrue N5 Different from the N5S?

The Vantrue N5 and N5S both record four channels with a 1944P front, but the N5S adds a 1440p rear camera and LTE support, and draws more power. Figures below are from the two Vantrue manuals, with sensors from Vantrue's product pages.

How Does the Vantrue N5 Install?

1. Clean the glass, fit the electrostatic sticker, and stick the GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror, using the bracket adhesion promoter in the box. The mount base separates from the bracket, so the camera comes off without removing the base.
2. Fix the rear module to the top of the back window with its adhesive sticker, clear of the demister lines, with the red-lit rear cabin lens facing forward over the back seat.
3. Run the 6m rear camera cable along the headlining to the front, using the trim tool, and plug it into the main unit.
4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with a Vantrue kit for parking mode. Then insert and format a microSD card and connect the Vantrue app to set the time zone, resolution and parking mode.

The rear cable run is the longest part of the job. In a van or a vehicle towing a caravan, the Vantrue 15m rear camera cable fits the N5. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.
