Read Number Plates Further Down the Road Without a Big Camera on the Glass. The VIOFO A119M Pro Dash Cam Records 4K From Behind Your Mirror

Many compact dash cams record in 2K, and 2K runs out of detail sooner than you would think. A number plate two cars ahead can turn into a smudge, and zooming in on a paused clip only makes the blur bigger. The usual fix is a larger 4K camera that sits in plain view. The VIOFO A119M Pro is a front dash cam that puts a 4K Sony STARVIS 2 sensor into a body small enough to tuck behind the rear-view mirror, with GPS and Wi-Fi 6 built in.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: The A119M Pro records the road ahead only, cannot take a rear camera and records at 30fps. If smoother motion matters more than detail, the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 records 2K at 60fps in the same compact shape. If you want front and rear, look at the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH. The A119M Pro is for drivers who want 4K detail from a discreet front camera.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • A body about 46 x 47 x 75mm that tucks behind most rear-view mirrors, so it stays out of your sightline and out of easy view from the footpath
  • Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor (8MP, 1/1.8-inch), which gives each 4K frame enough detail to zoom into a paused clip
  • 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30fps with HDR, so bright headlights and darker number plates can both stay readable at night
  • A CPL filter in the box, which cuts dashboard reflections off the windscreen in bright sun without a separate purchase
  • Quad-system GPS in the mount (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS), stamping speed and location on every clip
  • Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, for moving large 4K files to your phone through the VIOFO app
  • Voice control and support for the optional VIOFO BTR200 Bluetooth remote, so you can lock a clip without reaching for the camera

Good to Know

  • Parking mode needs a hardwire kit, sold separately. The VIOFO HK6 hardwire kit is the better choice, because it adds Hybrid Parking Mode on this camera. The VIOFO HK4 also works but does not offer Low Power Parking Mode. The included car charger powers the camera while you drive.
  • Video is saved as H.264 MP4 files, and 4K fills a card faster than 2K, so size your card up.
  • No microSD card is included. It takes cards up to 512GB.

Why Does 4K Matter in a Small Dash Cam?

Resolution decides how far away a number plate stays readable. A 2K camera records about 3.7 million pixels in each frame and a 4K camera about 8.3 million, so the same plate is drawn with more than twice the detail. That matters most when you pause a clip and zoom in, which is what you end up doing after a near miss or a scrape in a car park.

Compact cameras, including the A119 Mini 2, have mostly stopped at 2K, so getting 4K usually meant fitting a bigger box to the glass. The VIOFO A119M Pro fits the 8MP STARVIS 2 IMX678 into the small A119 shape, so you get the detail without the bulk. The trade-off is motion and storage. It records at 30fps, and 4K files take more room, so a larger card is part of the deal.

Top Benefits

  • Readable plates further back: 4K from the 8MP STARVIS 2 sensor leaves room to zoom into a paused clip.
  • Clearer night footage: HDR balances bright headlights against darker plates and road signs.
  • Less windscreen glare: The included CPL filter cuts dashboard reflections in harsh Australian sun.
  • Proof of speed and place: The quad-system GPS mount logs speed, time and location onto the footage.
  • Quicker clip sharing: Wi-Fi 6 sends 4K clips to your phone in the VIOFO app without pulling the card.
  • Hands-free control: Voice commands lock a clip, take a photo or turn Wi-Fi on while you drive.
  • Parked protection: With the HK6 kit, VIOFO lists Hybrid Parking Mode and Low Power Impact Detection on top of buffered auto event detection, time-lapse and low bitrate parking recording.

How Does the VIOFO A119M Pro Install?

  1. Clean the glass behind the rear-view mirror and fit one of the windscreen static stickers from the box.
  2. Slide the camera onto the GPS mount and press the mount onto the sticker, then angle the lens so the bonnet sits along the bottom of the picture.
  3. Fit the CPL filter over the lens and turn it while watching the screen until reflections from the dashboard fade.
  4. Tuck the power lead into the headlining and down the pillar with the trim tool, then plug it into the 12V socket with the included car charger.
  5. Insert and format a microSD card in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and parking options.

The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the trim tool. Hardwiring with the HK6 or HK4 means finding a switched and a constant fuse. If fitment is a barrier, see the note below on finding a local installer.

FAQ

  • Q: Can I add a rear camera to the A119M Pro later? A: No. The A119M Pro is a front-only camera with no rear camera port, and it cannot be upgraded to two channels. If you think you will want rear footage, start with a two-channel model such as the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH, which pairs a 4K front camera with a 2K rear camera.
  • Q: Does the A119M Pro record 4K at 60fps? A: No. Every resolution records at 30fps, including 4K, 4K 21:9, 2K and 1080p. If smooth motion matters more to you than detail, the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 records 2K at 60fps in a similar compact body. If you want 4K and 60fps together, look at the VIOFO A329S, which is a larger camera.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK6 USB-C hardwire kit is the one we recommend. It powers the camera from the fuse box when the car is off and cuts power before the battery drops too low. With the HK6, VIOFO lists Hybrid Parking Mode and Low Power Impact Detection for the A119M Pro, plus cut-off voltage protection. The HK4 also works for auto event detection, time-lapse and low bitrate recording, but it does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • Q: What size memory card should I get? A: A 256GB VIOFO Industrial card is a sensible starting point for a single 4K channel, and 512GB, the camera's maximum, suits long drives or long parked stays on time-lapse. 4K files are large, so a small card loops over old footage quickly. Use a high-endurance card, because cheap cards are a frequent cause of lost or corrupted footage.
  • Q: Is the A119M Pro worth it over the A119 Mini 2? A: If detail matters more than smoothness, yes. The A119M Pro adds 4K from a larger 8MP 1/1.8-inch sensor, Wi-Fi 6 and a CPL filter in the box. The Mini 2 records 2K at 60fps and costs less. Both use the same compact A119 shape and the same GPS mount, so either one hides behind the mirror.
  • Q: Do I need to buy a CPL filter? A: No. A VIOFO CPL-100 filter comes in the box. It cuts reflections from the dashboard on the inside of the windscreen, which helps a lot in bright sun. Fit it after you have aimed the camera, then turn it while watching the screen until the reflections fade. The same CPL-100 also fits the A119 Mini 2.
  • Q: How do I get footage onto my phone? A: Long press the Wi-Fi button or say "Turn On Wi-Fi", join the camera's network on your phone, then open the VIOFO app and choose Connect Camera. VIOFO recommends the 5GHz band for faster transfers. You can also pull the card and play the files on a computer.
