Read the Number Plate in Front of You, at Night. The VIOFO A149 Pro Duo is a 2-channel 4K dash cam with a Sony STARVIS 2 front camera and a 1080p rear

Most front-and-rear dash cams sold as "4K" are only 4K at the front, and the brochure rarely says so out loud. You find out the first time you try to read a plate off the rear footage and it is a grey smear. The A149 Pro Duo does not hide it. The front is genuine 4K on a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, the rear is 1080p, and knowing which half of the car you actually need evidence from is the whole buying decision here.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: If the incident you are worried about happens behind you, 1080p is the weak link. Tailgaters, car park scrapes and rear-end claims all hinge on a plate you can actually read, and 1080p across a rear windscreen at highway speed will not always give you one. Buy the VIOFO A229 Pro 2-CH instead, which runs 2K at the rear. The A149 Pro Duo is for drivers whose real risk is in front of them: highway commuters, rideshare drivers and anyone who mostly needs a clean forward record.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 8 MP front sensor, which is the part that holds plate detail under streetlights instead of blooming out into white smear
  • True 3840 x 2160 at 30 fps on the front channel, so a plate two cars ahead survives the crop when you zoom in on the footage
  • HDR on both channels, which stops oncoming headlights from wiping out the rest of the frame on a dark road
  • Wi-Fi 6 on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, rated by VIOFO at up to 30 MB/s, which is the difference between pulling a clip at the roadside and giving up on it
  • Quad-mode GPS across GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS, stamping speed, location and time onto every clip
  • Five parking modes including hybrid recording and low-power impact detection, so you can match the mode to how long the car actually sits
  • Geofencing that shuts parking mode down at your own driveway, which stops the camera burning card space filming your garage wall
  • Supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery, which is the right call for a car that bakes in an Australian car park all summer

Good to Know

  • Parking mode of any kind needs the VIOFO HK6-A hardwire kit, bought separately from our hardwire kits. The supplied cigarette-socket charger will not run it, and VIOFO states the data port does not support parking mode either.
  • No microSD card is included. VIOFO's own packing list and specification both list the card as optional, and the camera takes up to 512 GB.
  • The rear camera is an interior unit for the inside of your rear windscreen. There is no waterproof or external rear option for this model, and the rear cable supplied is 6 m.
  • The front CPL-800 filter is included. The rear CPL-600 is not, and is sold separately.
  • Voice control is supported in English, Mandarin, Russian and Japanese. VIOFO does not publish an Australian-accent accuracy figure, so we will not claim one.

Why the Rear Channel Resolution Decides This Purchase

A rear camera has a harder job than a front camera, and resolution is how it loses. The front camera looks through a clean, steeply raked windscreen at a subject you are closing on. The rear camera looks through a more heavily tinted rear windscreen, often with a demister grid across it, at a vehicle that is holding station behind you. That plate is smaller in the frame, further away and lit only by your own brake lights. A 1080p sensor spreads roughly two million pixels across that whole scene, so the plate might occupy forty pixels across. Zoom in and there is nothing left to recover. Stepping to 2K or 4K at the rear roughly doubles or quadruples the pixels on that same plate. The honest trade-off is cost and card space: a 4K rear channel costs more up front and fills a card far faster, which is exactly why VIOFO sells both and why this one is the cheaper half of that choice.

How It Compares to the A229 Pro in Our Range

A149 Pro Duo A229 Pro 2-CH

Top Benefits

  • Plates you can actually use: the 8 MP STARVIS 2 front sensor holds enough detail at 4K that a zoomed crop of a number plate still resolves.
  • Night is the point: STARVIS 2 with HDR on the front channel keeps detail in the dark parts of the frame without blowing out headlights.
  • Footage off the camera fast: Wi-Fi 6 at up to 30 MB/s means you can hand an insurer a clip from the roadside rather than promising to send it later.
  • Evidence with context: quad-mode GPS stamps speed, location and time on every clip, which answers the questions a plain video cannot.
  • Parking cover that suits the car: five parking modes let you pick continuous low-bitrate for a busy street or low-power impact detection for a car that sits for days.
  • Built for a hot car: a supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery, rated by VIOFO to 65 degrees C operating.
  • Room to record: support for up to 512 GB, and a 1080p rear channel that fills that card more slowly than a 2K or 4K rear would.

How It Installs

  1. Mount the front camera behind your rear-view mirror with the supplied adhesive GPS mount. On an Australian right-hand-drive car this usually sits to the left of the mirror, on the passenger side, where it stays out of your sightline.
  2. Run the 6 m rear cable down the passenger A-pillar, along the headlining or the door seals, and across to the rear windscreen. The supplied trim removal tool is for tucking the cable into the seals.
  3. Mount the rear camera on the inside of the rear windscreen, inside the demister grid where possible, and rotate the lens to level. The rear lens adjusts through 360 degrees, so a raked rear screen is not a problem.
  4. Power it. The supplied 3.5 m cigarette-socket charger runs driving-mode recording only. For parking mode, the HK6-A hardwire kit goes to a fuse box instead, which means pulling a kick panel and using a circuit tester to find a switched fuse.
  5. Insert a microSD card of up to 512 GB, format it in the camera, then set the time zone and parking mode from the menu or the VIOFO app.

Budget about an hour for a tucked cigarette-socket install and two to three hours for a hardwired one if you have not done it before.

What's in the Box

  • Front camera with GPS mount
  • Rear camera
  • CPL-800 circular polarising filter for the front camera
  • Rear camera cable, 6 m
  • Car charger, 3.5 m
  • USB Type-C data cable, 0.5 m
  • Trim removal tool
  • Warning sticker, spare front mount sticky pad, and 3 x windscreen static stickers
  • User manual, quick start guide and after-sales service card

Not included: microSD card, HK6-A hardwire kit, CPL-600 rear filter, BTR200 Bluetooth remote and BP100 battery pack are all sold separately.

Fitment and Compatibility

  • Vehicles: any 12 V or 24 V car, ute, van or light truck with a cigarette socket or an accessible fuse box. Nothing about the camera is vehicle-specific.
  • Right-hand drive: the mount is symmetrical and the rear lens rotates through 360 degrees, so there is no left-hand-drive-only limitation. VIOFO's own installation photography shows left-hand-drive cars, which is worth ignoring.
  • Memory cards: microSD up to 512 GB. Use a high-endurance or industrial card. Standard phone cards fail early under constant loop recording.
  • Parking mode: requires the VIOFO HK6-A hardwire kit. The USB-C data port on the camera does not support parking mode.
  • Accessories: CPL-600 rear filter, BTR200 Bluetooth remote, and the BP100 or BP60 battery packs are all supported.
  • Not compatible with: VIOFO waterproof rear cameras such as the RWC400, interior cabin cameras, telephoto modules, or any third-channel expansion. The A149 Pro Duo is a fixed 2-channel camera and cannot be made into a 3-channel one.

Upgrade Your Evidence Today

Ultra-Low Draw, Instant Guard. Very low power draw makes this mode ideal for long parking sessions. A149 Pro waits in standby with impact detection always on, waking within 2 seconds to record a one-minute clip.

  • Time Lapse Recording: Capture footage without audio at optional frame rates of 1 / 2 / 3 / 5 / 10 fps to conserve storage space and power. With Super Night Vision, the time-lapse footage is brighter and clearer, even in near-total darkness.
  • Super Night Vision (SNV): Super Night Vision brightens parking footage in near-total darkness, keeping plates and surroundings visible.
  • Low Bitrate Recording: Records continuously at a reduced bitrate to extend recording time and save storage while parked.
  • Auto Event Detection: Detects motion and impacts around your parked car, automatically saving the moments before and after each event.

  • Low Voltage Cutoff: If voltage ever drops below the level set on the hardwire kit's cutoff switch, power is cut entirely to protect the battery.
  • Detachable Design: With removable input and output cables and simple plug-in connections, installation, maintenance, and future upgrades are easier than ever.
  • Voltage Display via Bluetooth: Check your car battery's real-time voltage in the VIOFO app via Bluetooth, anytime.

Battery Pack Ready. Longer Parking, Zero Battery Drain

Pair with the VIOFO BP100 or BP60 battery pack (sold separately) and parking mode runs on battery power, for hours longer, without draining your vehicle battery. Smart Bluetooth features show battery level in the app and on footage.

  • Cut-off Battery Pack Capacity: Connected to the battery pack, the dash cam reads its level wirelessly and ends parking recording at the reserve you choose (5% / 8% / 10% / 15%). The reserve keeps impact detection armed, so the camera can still wake and record if the car is hit.
  • Battery Level in the VIOFO Dashcam App: Check the battery pack level on the app home screen, even while the dash cam is off. The dashboard adds charging status, temperature, input and output readings, and the estimated remaining runtime.
  • Battery Level Stamp on Footage: Enable the Battery Pack Capacity stamp and every clip records the remaining battery level at the moment of recording, useful context when reviewing a parking incident days later.

FAQ

  • Q: Will it keep recording after I switch the car off? A: Not on the supplied cigarette-socket charger. That socket dies with the ignition in most cars, so the camera shuts down with it. Parked recording needs the VIOFO HK6-A hardwire kit wired to a fuse box, which gives the camera constant power plus the low-voltage cutoff that stops it flattening your battery. This is the single most common wrong assumption we hear about dash cams.
  • Q: Does the A149 Pro Duo drain my car battery? A: Not while you are driving, because the alternator is doing the work. Parked is where the question matters. Hardwired through the HK6-A, you set a cutoff voltage and the kit disconnects the camera before the battery drops too far to start the car. If your car sits for weeks at a time, or has a tired battery, add a BP100 battery pack so parking mode runs off its own power instead.
  • Q: What size memory card should I actually buy? A: For driving only, 128 GB is enough for most people. If you are running parking mode as well, go 256 GB or 512 GB, because parked recording adds hours of footage every day and a small card loops over the evidence before you get to it. Use an industrial or high-endurance card. A standard phone card is built for occasional writes and fails early under constant loop recording.
  • Q: Is 4K actually worth it, or would 2K do? A: It is worth it when the plate you need is not directly in front of you. At 2K a plate three cars ahead or in the next lane is often too coarse to read once you crop in. 4K keeps enough pixels on that plate to survive the zoom. The trade-off is file size, so 4K fills a card faster and that is why card capacity matters more on this camera than on a 1080p one.
  • Q: Do I have to tell my insurer I have a dash cam? A: Australian insurers generally do not require you to declare a dash cam, because it is not a modification to the vehicle. Policies differ though, and some offer a discount if you tell them, so it is worth a look at your PDS or a quick call. We are a retailer, not insurance advisers, so treat that as a prompt to check rather than an answer about your specific policy.
  • Q: Is VIOFO a Chinese brand, and does that matter? A: Yes, VIOFO is a Chinese company and the cameras are made in China, as are almost all dash cams including the ones sold under European and Korean brand names. What matters more is the sensor and the support behind it. This one uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678, and buying it here means an 18-month warranty handled locally rather than a return posted overseas.
  • Q: Can I use it on a motorbike, a caravan or a boat? A: No. Neither camera is weather sealed and VIOFO publishes no IP rating for this model, so both units have to live inside the cabin. For an exposed mount you want a camera designed for it, such as the VIOFO MT1 for motorcycles or a model that takes the RWC400 waterproof rear camera. Inside a caravan or a boat cabin it will work, but it was designed for a windscreen.
  • Q: Can I add a cabin camera later to make it 3-channel? A: No. The A149 Pro Duo is a fixed 2-channel camera with one rear camera port, and there is no third input to expand into. If you drive rideshare and need the cabin covered, buy a 3-channel model from the start rather than planning to upgrade. Email us at gday@dashcamguys.com.au with what you drive and we will point you at the right one.
