Read the Number Plate Further Up the Road, and Keep Watch Behind. The VIOFO A229 Pro Tele 3CH Pairs a 4K Front With a 4x Optical Zoom Telephoto and a 1080p Rear
A wide dash cam lens is good at showing what happened and poor at showing who did it. It spends its pixels on two lanes, the kerb and the sky, so a car a few lengths ahead covers a tiny patch of the frame and its plate breaks up as soon as you zoom in. The VIOFO A229 Pro Tele 3CH adds a second forward camera with a 35° lens and 4x optical zoom that puts all of its 2K on the lane ahead, while a 1080p rear camera covers the back.

Who This Isn't For: Three channels is the A229 Pro's limit and this kit uses all three on the road, so a cabin camera cannot be added. Rideshare drivers should look at the VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH instead. If you want 60fps, Wi-Fi 6 and SSD storage with the same telephoto idea, the VIOFO A329T 3CH steps up and records a 2K rear. The A229 Pro Tele 3CH is for drivers who care most about identifying the car ahead and still want the rear covered.
DCG Highlights
What We Love
- A 2K telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom and a narrow 35° view, which captures plates a wide lens leaves too small to read
- Sony STARVIS 2 sensors on all three cameras: an 8MP IMX678 front, a 5MP IMX675 telephoto and a 2MP IMX662 rear
- HDR on all three channels, so headlights and a low sun do not wash out the plate you are trying to read
- A 4K front camera at 30fps behind a 140° lens for the full scene, with the CPL-200 filter in the box
- A 160° 1080p rear camera, so a three-camera system still covers the back of the car
- Quad-mode GPS (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS) and dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so every clip carries time, speed and location
- A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which copes with a hot parked car far better than lithium cells do
Good to Know
- The rear camera records 1080p, not 2K. It gives you context behind the car rather than distant rear plates.
- The telephoto view is narrow by design. It has to be aimed straight down your lane, and it supports the wide front camera rather than replacing it.
- No cabin camera can be added. All three channels are already in use.
- Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately. Polarising filters for the telephoto and rear cameras are also sold separately.
Why Does a Telephoto Camera Read Plates a Wide Lens Cannot?
Every dash cam has the same budget of pixels across the frame. A 140° front lens spreads them over the whole road, which is what you want for context and exactly what you do not want for a plate several car lengths ahead. By the time you pause and zoom in on that car, there are too few pixels left to read the characters, and no amount of software puts them back.
The telephoto camera on the VIOFO A229 Pro Tele 3CH narrows the view to 35° with 4x optical zoom, so a distant vehicle fills far more of its 2K frame. That is optical magnification, captured at recording time, not a digital crop afterwards. The trade-off is coverage: it only sees straight ahead, so it works alongside the 4K wide camera rather than instead of it, and a badly aimed telephoto records the kerb. Aim it once, check a clip, and it earns its place.
Top Benefits
- Distant plates on record: The 4x optical zoom captures plates well beyond what the wide lens can resolve.
- Full scene and close detail: The 4K wide front and the 2K telephoto record together, so you get context and the plate in one event.
- Rear covered as well: A 1080p STARVIS 2 rear camera records behind the car on the third channel.
- Clear footage into the sun: HDR on every channel and the included CPL-200 front filter tame glare.
- Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.
- Clips on your phone fast: 5GHz Wi-Fi and a direct USB-C connection move footage to the VIOFO app without removing the card.
How Does the A229 Pro Tele 3CH Install?
- Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its power lead into the headlining.
- Fix the telephoto camera to the windscreen beside the front camera and aim it straight down your lane, level with the horizon.
- Run the 6m rear camera cable along the headlining to the rear window and fix the rear camera to the glass.
- Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with the HK4 kit for parking mode, then check a telephoto clip in the VIOFO app before you tidy the cables away.
Aiming the telephoto is the only fiddly step. A level horizon now saves pulling the trim off twice.

FAQ
FAQ
- Q: Can I add a cabin camera to the A229 Pro Tele 3CH? A: No. The A229 Pro records up to three channels, and this kit already uses all three for the front, telephoto and rear cameras. If you need the cabin recorded, for rideshare for example, choose the A229 Pro 3CH, which pairs the 4K front and 2K rear with an infrared cabin camera.
- Q: Does the telephoto camera record behind the car? A: No. The telephoto faces forward, beside the wide front camera, and zooms in on the lane ahead. The rear of the car is covered by the separate 1080p rear camera that comes in this kit.
- Q: Is the rear camera 2K? A: No. On the A229 Pro Tele 3CH the rear camera records 1080p on a 2MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX662 sensor with HDR. It gives clear context behind the car, but for distant rear plates a 2K rear camera such as the one on the standard A229 Pro 2CH holds more detail.
- Q: Is the VIOFO A229 Pro Tele Wi-Fi 6? A: No. It has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is quick enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app. Wi-Fi 6 is on the VIOFO A329T, which also records its front camera at 60fps. You can copy footage to a recent phone over a USB-C to USB-C cable as well.
- Q: What is the difference between the A229 Pro Tele 3CH and the A329T 3CH? A: Both pair a 4K front with a 2K 4x telephoto and add a rear camera. The A329T adds Wi-Fi 6, external SSD support, Low Power and Hybrid parking modes with the HK6 kit, and a 2K rear. The A229 Pro Tele 3CH records a 1080p rear and costs less. Choose the A329T if storage and parking features matter.
- Q: Which memory card should I use? A: A high-endurance microSD card of 256GB or 512GB. Three channels write a lot of data, so a smaller card loops over older clips sooner. The camera takes cards up to 512GB, and none is included in the box.
- Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit. It powers the camera from the fuse box with the engine off and cuts power before the battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parking recording runs as auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate recording.
