Who This Isn't For: If you carry passengers and want the cabin recorded, the VIOFO A329TC swaps the rear camera for an infrared cabin camera. If you do not need a rear camera, the VIOFO A329T 2CH keeps the telephoto and records the front at 4K 60fps. Why Does a Telephoto Dash Cam Read Plates Other Cameras Miss?

A normal dash cam lens is wide, around 140°, so it can see both lanes, the kerb and the car beside you. The price of that width is detail at distance: a car a few lengths ahead covers so few pixels that its plate cannot be read, however sharp the sensor is.

A telephoto camera works the other way. The A329T's 35° lens with 4x optical zoom spends all its pixels on a narrow slice of road straight ahead, so a vehicle further up the road fills far more of the frame. Because the zoom is optical, the extra detail is real rather than stretched from a crop. The trade-off is coverage. The telephoto sees only a slice of the road, so it relies on the wide front camera to show the whole scene, and it records at 2K rather than 4K.

How Does the VIOFO A329T 3CH Install?

1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror, then fit the telephoto camera beside it and connect it with the telephoto cable.
2. Aim the telephoto so it points straight down your lane, level with the horizon. If it points off to one side, it records the kerb instead of the car ahead.
3. Run the rear camera cable along the headlining to the rear window and fix the rear camera to the glass.
4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included dual USB-C car charger, or hardwire it with the HK6 kit for the full set of parking modes, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and parking options.

Aiming the telephoto is the fiddly part, so check a test clip in the app before you tidy the cables away.
