Record the Road Behind a Ute, Van or Canopy, Not Your Rear Window. The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 2CH Pairs a 4K Front With a 2K IP67 Waterproof Rear Camera

A rear dash cam normally sticks to the inside of the back window. On a dual-cab ute that window looks over the tray, a toolbox or a canopy, and on a van there may be no rear window at all. Dark tint does the rest. The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 2CH moves the rear camera outside: an IP67 waterproof unit you mount on the tailgate, canopy or rear body, so it records the car behind you rather than the back of your load.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: If your car has a clear, untinted rear window, the standard VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH records the same 4K front and 2K rear with a far simpler install, because no cable has to come in from outside. If you want 4K at the back as well, the VIOFO A229 Ultra W 2CH is the step up. The A229 Pro-W 2CH is for utes, vans, trucks and canopies where an inside rear camera cannot see past the load.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • An IP67 waterproof rear camera that mounts outside the vehicle, so a canopy, toolbox, cargo barrier or dark tint no longer blocks the rear view
  • Sony STARVIS 2 sensors at both ends (8MP IMX678 front, 5MP IMX675 rear), the same pair as the standard A229 Pro 2CH, so moving the rear camera outside costs nothing in image quality
  • HDR on the front and the rear, which keeps a number plate readable when headlights or a low sun hit the lens
  • A 4K front camera at 30fps behind a 140° lens, with the CPL-200 filter in the box to cut dashboard reflections off the windscreen
  • A 160° rear lens, wide enough to take in the lanes behind a ute rather than one car directly behind the tailgate
  • Quad-mode GPS (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS) and dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so clips carry speed and location and reach your phone without pulling the card
  • A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which copes with a hot parked car far better than lithium cells do

Good to Know

  • The rear cable has to get from outside the body to the front camera, usually through an existing grommet or a new sealed hole. Allow for that in the install.
  • VIOFO makes this kit with an 8m, 10m or 15m total rear cable run. Check the length suits your vehicle before you order.
  • Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • Both channels record at 30fps. There is no 60fps mode on the A229 Pro.

Why Does an Outside Rear Camera Beat a Rear Window Camera on a Ute?

An inside rear camera can only record what its window can see. On a sedan that works. On a dual-cab ute the rear window sits behind the cab, with the tray, the tailgate and often a toolbox or canopy between it and the road, so the car behind you is either hidden or reduced to a few pixels at the bottom of the frame. Dark tint makes night footage worse again, because the camera is filming through it.

The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 2CH puts the rear lens outside, on the tailgate or canopy, with clear air between it and the following car. The IP67 rating is what makes that possible: the housing is sealed against dust, rain and the car wash. The trade-off is the install. The cable has to come inside through a grommet or a sealed hole, and that is the part some owners would rather hand to an installer.

Top Benefits

  • Clear view past the load: The IP67 rear camera mounts outside, so canopies, toolboxes and tint stop blocking the rear view.
  • Readable rear plates: The 5MP STARVIS 2 rear sensor records 2K with HDR, so the car behind is identifiable, not just visible.
  • Sharper front detail: The 8MP IMX678 front sensor records 4K at 30fps, so distant detail holds up when you zoom in.
  • Less windscreen glare: The included CPL-200 filter cuts reflections off the glass on bright days.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.
  • Room for a third camera: The interior camera port stays free, so a VIOFO cabin camera can be added later.

How Does the A229 Pro-W 2CH Install?

  1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its power lead into the headlining with the trim tool in the box.
  2. Mount the waterproof rear camera on the tailgate, canopy or rear body with its bracket, aimed level at the road behind.
  3. Bring the rear camera lead inside through an existing grommet or a sealed hole, join it to the extension cable and run that along the body to the front camera.
  4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with the HK4 kit for parking mode, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and recording options.

Steps 2 and 3 take the time. Measure the cable route before you order, from the rear camera position, through the body and along the roof lining to the windscreen. A cable that ends half a metre short is the longest half metre you will ever own.

FAQ

  • Q: Can the A229 Pro-W rear camera go outside the vehicle? A: Yes, that is what it is built for. The rear camera is IP67 rated and comes with a bracket and screws for mounting on a tailgate, canopy or rear body. The parts to seal carefully are the cable joint and the point where the cable enters the vehicle, because the camera itself is sealed but the hole you make is not.
  • Q: Which rear cable length do I need? A: Measure the route from where the rear camera will sit, through the body and along the roof lining to the windscreen, then allow some slack. VIOFO makes this kit with 8m, 10m and 15m total runs. If you are not sure which suits your vehicle, contact us with the make, model and where the camera will go, and we will tell you before you order.
  • Q: Is the VIOFO A229 Pro-W Wi-Fi 6? A: No. It has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is quick enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app. Wi-Fi 6 is on the VIOFO A329S and T330 ranges. You can also copy footage straight to a recent phone over a USB-C to USB-C cable without using Wi-Fi at all.
  • Q: Does the A229 Pro-W 2CH come with a memory card? A: No. It takes a microSD card of up to 512GB. Use a high-endurance card built for continuous recording, because ordinary cards wear out quickly under constant writing. For two channels of 4K and 2K, 256GB is the size we suggest.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit. It powers the camera from the fuse box with the engine off and cuts power before the battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parking recording runs as auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate recording.
  • Q: Do I need a CPL filter on the waterproof rear camera? A: No. VIOFO lists the waterproof rear camera as not needing one, because it films in open air rather than through glass, so there are no window reflections to cut. The CPL-200 filter for the front camera is already in the box.
  • Q: Can I add a cabin camera later? A: Yes. The waterproof rear camera uses the rear port and leaves the interior port free, so a VIOFO A229 cabin camera such as the RF200 infrared model plugs in later and makes it a three-channel system. If you want the cabin covered from day one, the A229 Pro-W 3CH kit includes it.
