• Mounting outside is a longer install. The waterproof cable has to enter the vehicle through a grommet or a sealed entry point.
• VIOFO makes the waterproof rear cable in 7.5m, 9.5m and 14.5m lengths. Measure your run and ask us which length is in stock before you order.
• Parking mode needs a hardwire kit, sold separately. The VIOFO HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
• Both channels record at 30fps, and two 4K streams fill a card fast. Plan on 256GB as the minimum, not included.

Why Does an Exterior 4K Rear Camera Beat a Sharper Camera Behind the Glass?

An exterior rear camera records the road behind you directly, so nothing sits between the lens and the plate you need. An interior rear camera looks through the back window, which usually means factory tint, a demister grid and whatever is in the load area. On a ute with a canopy or a van with no rear glass, it sees nothing useful at all, and a higher resolution sensor does not help because the obstruction is in front of the lens.

The VIOFO A229 Ultra W 2CH moves the rear camera outside, above the plate, on the tailgate or under the roofline. Its IP67 housing handles rain and spray, and its Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor records 3840 x 2160 with HDR, so the plate behind you gets the same detail as the road ahead. The trade-off is the install and the upkeep. The cable has to be sealed where it enters the vehicle, and a camera mounted outside collects road grime, so it needs an occasional wipe to stay useful.

How Does the A229 Ultra W 2CH Install?

1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck the power lead into the headlining with the trim tool in the box.
2. Fix the waterproof rear camera to the outside of the vehicle, above the plate, on the tailgate or under the roofline, using the 3M adhesive or the two screws supplied.
3. With the front camera switched off, route the waterproof rear camera cable into the cabin through a grommet or sealed entry point, then along the headlining to the front camera.
4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it to the fuse box with the HK4 kit if you want parking mode.
5. Insert and format a microSD card, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time zone, GPS and recording options.

The exterior cable run is the slow part. On a canopy ute or a van it often means finding a factory grommet or adding a sealed one, so allow extra time for it or hand that step to an installer.
