Cover the Road Ahead, the Road Behind and the Cabin, Even on a Ute. The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 3CH Records 4K Front, 2K Waterproof Rear and 1080p Infrared Cabin

Rideshare and work vehicles need two kinds of evidence: what happened on the road, and what happened inside. A standard three-channel kit covers both until the rear camera has to look through a canopy, a cargo barrier or very dark tint. The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 3CH keeps the infrared cabin camera and moves the rear camera outside, into an IP67 waterproof housing that records the traffic behind you instead of the back of your load.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: If you do not need the cabin recorded, the two-channel VIOFO A229 Pro-W 2CH covers the front and waterproof rear for less. If your rear window is clear and untinted, the standard VIOFO A229 Pro 3CH is a quicker install. If you want 4K at the back too, the VIOFO A229 Ultra W 3CH is the step up. The A229 Pro-W 3CH is for rideshare drivers, tradies and fleets whose vehicle needs an outside rear camera and a record of the cabin.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • An infrared cabin camera with four IR LEDs and a 150° lens, which switches to black and white in low light so the whole cabin stays visible at night
  • An IP67 waterproof rear camera that mounts outside, so a canopy, cargo barrier or dark tint no longer decides what the rear camera can see
  • Sony STARVIS 2 sensors on the road-facing cameras (8MP IMX678 front, 5MP IMX675 rear) for detail after dark
  • HDR on all three channels, which balances headlights, street lights and a dark cabin in the same clip
  • A 4K front camera at 30fps with the CPL-200 filter in the box to cut windscreen reflections
  • Quad-mode GPS (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS) and dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so every clip carries time, speed and location
  • A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which suits a car parked in the Australian sun

Good to Know

  • The cabin camera uses Sony's earlier STARVIS IMX307 sensor, not STARVIS 2. It is built for the cabin at close range, not for reading plates.
  • The rear cable has to get from outside the body to the front camera, usually through an existing grommet or a new sealed hole.
  • Parking mode needs the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, sold separately. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • All three channels record at 30fps, and three channels fill a card quickly. Plan on 256GB or 512GB.

Why Record the Cabin as Well as the Road?

Road cameras show what the car did. They say nothing about what happened inside it: a passenger dispute, something thrown, a claim about what the driver was doing in the seconds before a crash. For rideshare drivers and fleet vehicles, that inside view is often the half of the story that matters most, and it usually happens at night.

The VIOFO A229 Pro-W 3CH answers that with a 1080p cabin camera that turns on four infrared LEDs when the light drops, so the cabin records in black and white rather than going dark. The waterproof rear camera solves the other half of the problem on utes and vans, where an inside rear camera would only film the canopy. The trade-off is the install: three cameras, one of them outside the body, take longer to fit than any window-mounted kit.

Top Benefits

  • A clear view of the cabin at night: Four infrared LEDs keep the 1080p cabin camera recording when the street lights run out.
  • Rear cover past the load: The IP67 rear camera mounts outside, so canopies, barriers and tint stop blocking the view.
  • Sharper front detail: The 8MP IMX678 front sensor records 4K at 30fps, so distant plates hold up when you zoom in.
  • Balanced footage in mixed light: HDR on all three channels evens out headlights against darker plates and a dark cabin.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.
  • Hands-free clip saving: Voice control and the optional BTR200 remote lock a clip without taking your hands off the wheel.

How Does the A229 Pro-W 3CH Install?

  1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its power lead into the headlining with the trim tool in the box.
  2. Fix the cabin camera to the windscreen beside the front camera, facing into the car, and connect it to the interior port with the 1m interior camera cable.
  3. Mount the waterproof rear camera on the tailgate, canopy or rear body, bring its lead inside through a grommet or sealed hole, and run the extension cable to the front camera.
  4. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it with the HK4 kit for parking mode, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and recording options.

Step 3 is where the time goes, so measure the rear cable route before you order. The cabin camera is the easy part, which makes a nice change.

What's in the Box?

  • VIOFO A229 Pro front camera with quad-mode GPS mount
  • Infrared cabin camera with a 1m interior camera cable
  • IP67 waterproof rear camera with a 0.5m lead
  • Waterproof rear camera extension cable (7.5m, 9.5m or 14.5m depending on the kit version)
  • CPL-200 front filter
  • Car charger (3.5m) and USB-C data cable (0.5m)
  • Trim removal tool and 2 screws
  • 3 windscreen static stickers and a set of spare mount sticky pads
  • User manual
  • Not included: microSD card, HK4 hardwire kit

Fitment & Compatibility

  • Suits: rideshare and taxi vehicles, utes with canopies, vans, work fleets and cars with dark rear tint
  • Rear camera position: outside, on the tailgate, canopy or rear body, usually above the number plate
  • Cabin camera position: on the windscreen beside the front camera, facing into the cabin
  • Rear cable: 8m, 10m or 15m total run depending on the kit version. Long trucks need the longest
  • Channels: three is the A229 Pro maximum, so this kit has no spare port for a fourth camera
  • Not compatible with: rear and interior cameras from the older VIOFO A229 Duo

FAQ

  • Q: Does the cabin camera record in colour at night? A: No. In daylight it records in colour, and when the light drops its sensor turns on four infrared LEDs and switches to black and white. That is how it keeps the whole cabin visible in a dark car, where a colour image would just go black.
  • Q: Is the A229 Pro-W 3CH good for rideshare? A: Yes, it is built for it. The 1080p infrared cabin camera records passengers day and night, while the front and waterproof rear cameras cover the road. If your car has a clear rear window, the standard A229 Pro 3CH does the same job with an easier rear install.
  • Q: Can I turn off the cabin audio? A: Yes. The microphone can be switched off with the button on the camera, by voice command or in the VIOFO app, and the camera keeps recording video. Whether you need to tell passengers they are being recorded depends on your state and your rideshare platform, so check both.
  • Q: Is the VIOFO A229 Pro-W Wi-Fi 6? A: No. It has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is quick enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app. Wi-Fi 6 is on the VIOFO A329S and T330 ranges. You can also copy footage to a recent phone over a USB-C to USB-C cable.
  • Q: Which memory card should I use with three channels? A: A high-endurance microSD card of 256GB or 512GB. Three channels of 4K, 2K and 1080p write a lot of data, so a smaller card loops over older clips sooner. The A229 Pro-W 3CH takes cards up to 512GB, and none is included in the box.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit. It powers the camera from the fuse box with the engine off and cuts power before the battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parking recording runs as auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate recording.
  • Q: Which rear cable length do I need? A: Measure from where the rear camera will sit, through the body and along the roof lining to the windscreen, then allow slack. VIOFO makes this kit with 8m, 10m and 15m total runs. If you are unsure, contact us with your vehicle and where the camera will go before you order.
