Run Parking Mode All Night Without Touching Your Car Battery. The VIOFO BP60 is a 5000mAh battery pack that powers your dash cam while you are parked
Every hardwire kit carries the same catch: parked recording draws from your starter battery, so you set a voltage cut-off to protect it, and the camera stops watching hours before you get back. The gap between the cut-off firing at 2am and you walking out at 7am is exactly where the damage tends to happen. A dedicated battery pack removes the trade-off, because the camera runs on its own power source rather than on your car's.
Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get a 12-month warranty on this accessory, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.
Who This Isn't For: If you leave the car parked for days at a time, or run three channels at full bitrate, 64 Wh will not stretch far enough and the VIOFO BP100 is the one to buy. If a few hours of parked cover is all you need and your starter battery is healthy, a hardwire kit does that job for far less. The BP60 is for drivers who park on the street overnight and want the camera still recording at breakfast.
DCG Highlights
What We Love
- Around 20 hours of parked recording on a single-channel camera, which covers a full night on the street
- Charges to full in roughly 45 minutes on the hardwire input, so even a short commute puts the whole night back in
- 0.82 kg in a 130 x 140 x 35 mm body, small enough to live in a glove compartment rather than eat a seat well
- LiFePO4 cells rather than standard lithium, which is the chemistry that copes with a car park in February
- Rated for 1,500 charge cycles before capacity falls to 80 per cent, so it is not a one-summer purchase
- Bi-directional USB-C at up to 60 W, so it charges at a desk indoors and charges a flat phone in a pinch
- Bluetooth to the VIOFO app shows charge level and temperature warnings, instead of three LEDs and a guess
- Your starter battery is never the power source, which suits older batteries, EVs, hybrids and long stays
Good to Know
- At 64 Wh it holds roughly a third less than the BP100. Three-channel systems come in nearer 9 to 12 hours than 20.
- Charging is specified between 0 and 50 degrees C, so a car sitting hotter than that pauses charging until it cools.
- Hardwiring gives the fastest charge and ignition-linked switching. The cable and fuse taps are supplied, but fuse box work is still fuse box work.
- It costs considerably more than a hardwire kit, so it earns its place when you genuinely park unattended overnight.
Why Your Camera Stops Recording Before You Get Back
A hardwire kit has a shutdown point built into it on purpose. It watches your starter battery and cuts power at a set voltage, commonly 11.8 V or 12.0 V, so the car still starts in the morning. On a healthy battery that buys a number of hours; on a tired one it can be a good deal less. The camera is not faulty when it stops, it is doing what the kit told it to do. A battery pack changes the arrangement. The BP60 charges from the car while the engine runs, then discharges its own 64 Wh into the camera once you switch off, so the cut-off that protects your car no longer decides how long you are covered. The trade-off is honest enough: you are buying a second battery, and it has to live somewhere in the cabin.
Why We Lean Towards a Battery Pack in an EV, Hybrid or Newer Car
A dash cam does not draw from the big traction battery in an EV. As we set out in Will a Dash Cam Drain My EV Battery?, accessories run off a separate 12 V battery, which in most EVs and hybrids is small and tightly managed by the car. Many of these vehicles also have no switched ACC fuse to hardwire to, which we cover in No ACC Fuse? Why Dash Cam Parking Mode Fails in Newer Cars.
There is a second reason that gets very little airtime. Nearly every new vehicle is LTE-connected, so the manufacturer can change how the car behaves while parked in an over-the-air update, including whether the traction battery tops up the 12 V accessory battery overnight. A hardwired parking setup that worked on Monday can be doing nothing on Tuesday, with nothing changed at your end. A battery pack takes the car out of that equation.
BP60 or BP100: What Is the Difference
| VIOFO BP60 | VIOFO BP100 | |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 5000 mAh / 64 Wh | 7650 mAh / 98 Wh |
| Single-channel runtime | About 20 hours | About 32 hours |
| Size and weight | 130 x 140 x 35 mm, 0.82 kg | 171 x 171 x 35 mm, 1.22 kg |
| Hardwire charge to full | About 45 minutes | About 70 minutes |
| USB-C charging | Yes, in and out, up to 60 W | Not supported |
| Expandable capacity | No | Yes, with the EP100 |
Buy the BP60 if a full night parked is the job and you want the pack to disappear into a glove compartment. Buy the BP100 if you park for days, run three channels, or want the option to expand later. More background in our complete Aussie guide to dash cam battery packs.
Top Benefits
- Cover the whole night: Around 20 hours on a single-channel camera means the recording is still running when you walk back out to the car.
- Nothing asked of your car: The starter battery is never the source, so there is no cut-off voltage to set and no flat battery to explain.
- Independent of the vehicle: No reliance on a switched circuit, or on how the manufacturer manages power in the next software update.
- Fits where big packs will not: 130 x 140 x 35 mm and 0.82 kg opens up a glove compartment or console a larger pack rules out.
- Built for Australian heat: LiFePO4 cells with a full battery management system, a 50 degree C warning and a 70 degree C automatic shutdown.
- Back to full on the commute: About 45 minutes hardwired, 65 minutes on the cigarette socket, or 85 minutes over USB-C.
- Charges more than the camera: The bi-directional USB-C port puts charge back into a flat phone when you need it to.
How It Installs
- Choose where the pack lives. VIOFO recommends the glove compartment first, then the centre console, then under a front seat, all of which keep it out of direct sun. Fix it down with the supplied Velcro tape.
- Run the input. For the fastest charge, connect the supplied 3 m hardwiring cable to a constant fuse and a switched fuse using the supplied fuse taps, plus an earth point. To skip the fuse box, use the 2 m cigarette lighter lead instead.
- Run the output. Use the 3.5 m Type-C dash cam cable for a direct connection, or the 4 m Type-C hardwire output cable from the 4-pin OUTPUT port where your camera needs parking mode signalling.
- Tuck the cables into the headlining and A-pillar trim, power the pack on, then pair it to the VIOFO app over Bluetooth to confirm it is charging.
Allow around an hour hardwired, or ten minutes for the cigarette socket route. Fuse box work means pulling some trim. We do not install cameras ourselves, but you can find someone local in our directory of independent installers. They are independent businesses, so you book and contract directly with them.

FAQ
FAQ
- Q: Can I just use a normal USB power bank instead? A: Not well, and this is the most common assumption we correct. A phone power bank cuts out when the draw drops, has no ignition-linked charging, and uses lithium-ion cells that do not enjoy a parked Australian car. The BP60 recharges automatically while you drive, holds output steady, and uses LiFePO4 cells rated to 70 degrees C.
- Q: Do I still need a hardwire kit as well? A: No. The BP60 includes its own 3 m hardwiring cable and four types of fuse tap, so it wires straight into the fuse box on its own. You only need a separate hardwire kit if you also want to power a second camera directly from the car.
- Q: Does it protect my car battery with a low-voltage cut-off? A: It does not need one in the usual sense. The BP60 only draws from the car while the engine is running, through the switched wire in the hardwire cable, then runs the camera from its own cells once you switch off. Your starter battery is never the parked power source.
- Q: Will it work in a 24 V truck or a caravan? A: Yes. The working range is DC 10 V to 28 V, which covers both 12 V and 24 V systems, so trucks, buses and caravan auxiliary circuits are all in scope. Check the fuse slot type before ordering if you plan to hardwire into a heavy vehicle fuse panel.
- Q: Is it safe to leave in a hot car all summer? A: It is rated to discharge up to 70 degrees C and shuts down automatically above that, with a warning at 50 degrees C. Charging stops outside 0 to 50 degrees C to protect the cells. Fit it in the glove compartment or under a seat rather than on a parcel shelf in the sun.
- Q: The BP60 will not show up in my Bluetooth list. What now? A: Pair it inside the VIOFO Dashcam app rather than in your phone Bluetooth settings, and make sure the pack is switched on with the Bluetooth indicator lit. If it still will not appear, email support@dashcamguys.com.au with your order number and we will walk you through the reset.
- Q: Why is my BP60 beeping? A: A beep signals a protection event rather than a fault: low charge under 10%, a temperature outside the safe window, or an over-current condition on the output. Check the app for which alert fired. A camera drawing more than 4 A from the 12 V output is the usual cause of an over-current beep.
- Q: Can I take it on a plane? A: At 64 Wh it sits under the 100 Wh limit most airlines apply to lithium batteries in carry-on baggage, so it generally travels in the cabin rather than the hold. Airline policies differ, so confirm with your carrier before you fly.
