Methodology note: The Dash Cam Guys has not tested an F70 Pro, an A119 Mini 2 and an A119M Pro under matched conditions on the same windscreen. There are no Dash Cam Guys measurements in this article. Every line above is a manufacturer specification taken from the brand's own published material.

Why 1080p versus 2K matters for a number plate

Resolution is how many pixels make up each frame. Full HD is roughly 2 megapixels per frame. 2K is roughly 3.7 megapixels. That extra detail is spread across the same width of road, so a number plate three or four car lengths ahead lands on more pixels and stays legible when you zoom in.

That zoom point is the practical one. A plate you can only just make out at full frame is the difference between a useful clip and a wasted one, and there are simply fewer pixels to work with at 1080p. Our page on dash cam video quality and resolution goes through this with plain examples.

Then add frame rate. The A119 Mini 2 records 60 frames per second at 2K. The F70 Pro records 30 at 1080p. More frames per second means less movement between each still, which helps when a car crosses your bonnet at speed.

What if you want more than 2K up front?

This is where the VIOFO A119M Pro comes in, and it is the natural step up from a THINKWARE F70 Pro. It records true 4K at 30 frames per second on a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor with HDR, and it does it in the same small, discreet, front-only body. HDR means the camera blends a brighter and a darker exposure of the same moment, so a number plate does not blow out to white under headlights or vanish into shadow under a bridge.

4K is roughly 8.3 megapixels per frame against 1080p's 2. Same width of road, four times the detail. If your reason for wanting the F70 Pro is that you want something tiny sitting behind the mirror that nobody notices, the A119M Pro keeps that exactly, then hands you the plate detail the F70 Pro cannot reach. It also has GPS built in, a supercapacitor rather than a battery, and takes cards up to 512GB.

The GPS difference is bigger than it sounds

The F70 Pro needs the separate GPSANT accessory stuck to your windscreen to log speed and location, and THINKWARE also ties its safety camera alerts to that accessory. Both VIOFOs have GPS built in.

Speed and location stamped into your footage is the difference between "I was doing the limit" and being able to show it. For a camera whose whole appeal is being small and discreet, having to add a second module on the glass rather works against the point.

What the THINKWARE F70 Pro does better

Three year voluntary warranty. THINKWARE Australia publishes three years on camera hardware, and 12 months on a genuine THINKWARE card, against VIOFO's 18 months for the A119 Mini 2. That is a real advantage. Both are voluntary warranties that sit on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights, which apply either way. Worth knowing the difference between genuine Australian stock and grey imports before you buy either brand, because a voluntary warranty is only as good as the seller behind it.

High temperature protection. THINKWARE lists integrated thermal protection on the F70 Pro, and its Smart parking mode drops the camera to impact only recording if the cabin gets too hot, then returns to motion detection or time lapse once it cools. That is worth having in a car parked in the sun. It is a design feature rather than a guarantee, and no electronic device in a hot cabin is failure proof. What we could not verify

• THINKWARE does not publish the F70 Pro's Wi-Fi band, so we have left that cell as unpublished rather than guess.
• THINKWARE does not name the F70 Pro's sensor model, only its size and pixel count.
• VIOFO does not publish a field of view, Wi-Fi band, screen or parking mode list for the A119M Pro in the material we work from, so those cells read "Not published".
• THINKWARE does not publish Australian pricing on its own site, so we have not quoted an F70 Pro price. The only prices here are ours.
  

Pro Tip: if you are buying a small front-only camera because you want it hidden behind the mirror, measure the space between your mirror and the glass first, and check the mount type before you commit. It matters more than you would think if you take the camera out of the car regularly.

The verdict

Buy the THINKWARE F70 Pro if: the three year voluntary warranty is what you are paying for, you want the thermal protection in a hot car, and 1080p is genuinely enough for how you drive.
