Thinkware Dash Cams in Australia: The Range Explained

Thinkware Dash Cams in Australia: The Range Explained

You have been looking at THINKWARE dash cams, and somewhere between the F70 Pro and the U3000 the model names started to blur. Then you tried to work out which tier you actually need and paused. That is the honest reason most people land here: not "which THINKWARE dash cam is best", but "is it worth it, and what else does the same job".

We're going to be upfront first with you, however: we stock VIOFO and WOLFBOX and we do not sell THINKWARE. Like we've said previously, that is no reason to run the brand down. It is good gear with a proper presence in Australia, and it does one thing nothing in our range matches. So here is the range tier by tier, and what each tier is really up against on specification.

Is THINKWARE a good dash cam?

Yes. Genuinely. Three things earn it credit.

Radar parking surveillance. The U3000 has radar built in, front and rear. With the car parked and switched off, it watches for something moving near the vehicle and only then wakes the camera, a bit like a security light on your porch. Nothing in our range does this. If someone circling your car at 2am is what keeps you awake, that one belongs to THINKWARE.

Local warranty support. THINKWARE has an official Australian distributor, so a claim is handled here rather than posted overseas, and THINKWARE Australia publishes three years on U3000 camera hardware. That sits on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights rather than replacing them, and it counts.

It is established. You can walk into a shop and see one, firmware gets updated, accessories are easy to find, and there is a local channel to ring if something goes wrong.

So the question is not whether THINKWARE is good. It is which tier is the right fit for what you drive and where you park it.

The THINKWARE dash cam range, tier by tier

Four tiers matter to most Australian drivers. Here is each with the closest match from our range, and the one we would nudge you towards with a bit more to spend. Our pricing is in the table further down.

THINKWARE model The close match The step up
F70 Pro, 1080p front only VIOFO A119 Mini 2 VIOFO A119M Pro
Q200, 2K front and 1080p rear WOLFBOX X3 2CH VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH
Q1000, dual 2K VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH
U3000, 4K front, 2K rear, radar parking VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH

F70 Pro: the entry tier

One camera facing forward, 1080p. It does the basic job, handing you proof when someone reverses into you and tells their insurer a different story. The VIOFO A119 Mini 2 records 2K on a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, and the A119M Pro steps up again. Detail is in our THINKWARE F70 Pro review for Australia.

Q200: the first 2 channel tier

2K up front, 1080p out the back. Most people start here once they realise the rear camera catches tailgaters. The WOLFBOX X3 2CH is good value, and the A229 Plus 2CH runs 2K on both channels rather than 1080p at the rear. More in our THINKWARE Q200 review for Australia.

Q1000: dual 2K

2K front and 2K rear. The A229 Plus 2CH matches that, and the A229 Pro 2CH takes the front channel to 4K. The trade offs are in our THINKWARE Q1000 review for Australia.

U3000: the flagship

4K front, 2K rear, radar parking. The A229 Pro 2CH matches the format, and the A229 Ultra 2CH records 4K on both channels, four times the pixel count of a 2K rear. What no VIOFO gives you is radar. Our THINKWARE U3000 review for Australia covers where that matters.

One specification difference is worth knowing about. THINKWARE publishes a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 front camera on the U3000 with a STARVIS IMX335 at the rear. The A229 Pro uses STARVIS 2 at both ends. Rear incidents are the ones you want proof of after dark, so read what Sony STARVIS 2 actually changes and decide whether it matters to how you drive.

What if you want 4K at 60 frames per second?

Of the models above, THINKWARE publishes 4K at 30 frames per second on the U3000. If 60 is what you are chasing, our flagship is the VIOFO A329S 2CH.

Think of video as a flip book. Twice as many pages a second means less blur on any page, so a car crossing in front of you at 60 km/h gives you twice as many chances at a readable number plate. That is a plate you can hand police rather than a grey smudge.

The A329S runs Sony STARVIS 2 in both cameras, lists HDR on both channels, and takes a card up to 512GB or an external SSD up to 4TB. HDR is high dynamic range, which in plain English means blending a bright exposure and a dark one into one frame, so a plate in harsh Australian glare stays readable.

What about parking mode and battery drain?

This is where the radar question really lives. THINKWARE's radar wakes the camera when something moves near the car. VIOFO takes another route with low power impact detection, dropping into a very low power state until the G sensor, the chip that feels a bump, detects a knock. Two different approaches to the same problem, and both work. We measured what the VIOFO route costs in amps, in our A329S and HK6 parking mode power draw test.

Either needs a hardwire kit, a permanent connection to your fuse box that powers the camera while the car is off, with a low voltage cut off so it stops before the battery goes flat.

Pro Tip: set that cut off, then test it over a weekend before you rely on it. Leave the car parked, come back Monday, and check it starts and there is footage. A car park after an incident is the wrong place to find out.

Where do you buy a THINKWARE dash cam in Australia?

THINKWARE has an official Australian distributor and the big automotive retailers carry it, so that channel gets you genuine Australian stock with local warranty.

The thing that decides your cover is who you buy from, not where the stock was built. Buy from an Australian seller and the manufacturer warranty is handled here, and your consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law are against a business you can actually reach. Buy direct from an overseas seller and that unit's manufacturer warranty usually sits with another region, and while the ACCC says the Australian Consumer Law still applies to overseas businesses selling into Australia, it also says getting a repair, replacement or refund out of one is difficult in practice. We wrote that up in more detail on genuine Australian stock and grey imports using our own brand as the example. The principle is the same whichever badge is on the camera.

Which THINKWARE dash cam alternative should you buy?

Work down from your tier in the table above. The close match gives you the same specification. The step up earns it when the rear channel is what you are counting on.

Buy the THINKWARE instead if radar parking is the feature you keep coming back to, or you want the longer voluntary warranty and a hardwire kit in the box. We would rather you got the right camera than bought ours.

New to this? Our Australian dash cam buying guide covers resolution, parking mode and installation.

Still weighing it up?

No spec sheet tells you how a THINKWARE car camera behaves in your ute through a Queensland summer. Tell us what you drive and where you park it, and Michael or Harrison will give you a straight answer, even if it is the camera we do not sell. No worries either way, we will get you sorted.

Commercial disclosure

Obvious, but worth saying: we have a horse in this race. We sell VIOFO and WOLFBOX, not THINKWARE or BlackVue.

So do not just take our word for it. Read what others have found, then make your own call. This is buying advice from a retailer, not a lab test.

That said, we take it seriously. Between us we have more than 15 years in dash cams, and we would rather lose a sale than fudge a number. Every specification above is published by the manufacturer, and every price is our own listed price, checked on 6 August 2026. Anything we could not source to those two places came out.

No brand paid us, sponsored this, or supplied a unit. Where THINKWARE is the stronger choice, we have said so.

Spotted a spec, a price or a date that is wrong? Tell us and we will correct it and note the change. Facts we fix, no argument. The verdict is our opinion, and we will either stand behind it or change our minds in public.
