An EV or a hybrid needs a slightly different dash cam setup to a petrol car. The camera is the easy part. The tricky bit is powering parking mode, because the 12V battery that runs the car's electronics is small and the car manages it closely. Everything on this page is chosen to get around that, from complete packs to the single harness that fixes the BYD wiring problem.

Why EVs Are Different

In a petrol car, a hardwire kit draws from a 12V battery that the alternator tops up every drive. In an EV, the big traction battery charges the small 12V battery through the car's own systems, and many cars let that 12V battery run low while parked. A dash cam drawing power all night can trigger warnings or leave you with a car that will not wake up. The fix is either a dedicated dash cam battery, which powers the camera while parked and leaves the car's battery alone, or a hardwire kit with a conservative cut-off. The BYD Catch

Across the BYD range, the interior fuse box is all constant power, so a standard hardwire kit has no switched fuse to tell the camera when the car is on.
