From a truck cab, the vehicle you need to identify is rarely the one beside you. It is the car that cut in well ahead and kept going, and on a wide-angle dash cam its plate is a few pixels wide. A front and rear kit also expects a rear window to mount to, which many rigid trucks do not have.   • 4K 60fps works only with HDR switched off. For night runs, 4K 30fps with HDR on balances headlights better.
  • On the VIOFO A329T 2CH, two channels means front and telephoto. A rear camera can be added later, and all three cameras then record at 30fps.
  • The telephoto view is narrow by design. It supports the wide front camera and does not replace it.

Why Does a Truck Dash Cam Need a Telephoto Lens?

A truck dash cam needs a telephoto lens because a wide lens cannot hold number plate detail at distance. A standard dash cam lens is about 140° wide, so it can show both lanes and the roadside. The price of that width is detail: a car several lengths ahead covers only a handful of pixels, and its plate cannot be read however sharp the sensor is.

The VIOFO A329T answers that with a second forward camera. Its 35° lens and 4x optical zoom spend every pixel on a narrow slice of road straight ahead, so a vehicle further up fills far more of the frame. Because the zoom is optical, the extra detail is real and not stretched from a crop. The trade-off is coverage. The telephoto records at 2K and sees only that slice of road, so it relies on the 4K front camera for the full scene, and neither camera sees behind you.

How Does the Heavy Rigid Essential Pack Install?

  1. Stick the front camera and GPS mount high on the windscreen, clear of your view of the road, then fit the telephoto camera beside it and connect it with the included 1m telephoto camera cable.
  2. Aim the telephoto so it points straight down your lane, level with the horizon. If it points off to one side, it records the roadside and not the vehicle ahead.
  3. Tuck the power cable along the trim with the included trim removal tool and plug the car charger into the 12V or 24V socket.
  4. Insert the 512GB card and format it in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time and GPS. Hold the lock button on the BTR200 remote for three seconds to pair it, and stick it where your hand rests.

No hardwiring is needed to record while you drive. Aiming the telephoto is the only fiddly part, so check a test clip in the app before you tidy the cables away.

  • Q: Will this pack work in a 24V truck? A: Yes, from the socket. VIOFO's manual says the included car charger plugs into a 12V or 24V power socket, and it steps that down to the 5V the camera runs on. Do not wire the camera straight to truck power. If you want it hardwired, the VIOFO HK6 kit is sold separately and has cut-off settings for 12V and 24V vehicles.
  • Q: Does 2CH mean front and rear cameras? A: No, and this is the most common mix-up. On the VIOFO A329T 2CH, both cameras face forward: a 4K wide front camera and a 2K telephoto camera. Nothing records behind the truck or inside the cab. A VIOFO rear camera can be added later, and all three cameras then record at 30fps.
  • Q: Does the pack record while the truck is parked? A: Not as supplied. The car charger powers the camera only while the socket is live, and the pack has no hardwire kit. Locked clips are kept out of the loop. If you want weeks of footage, the A329T also records to an external SSD of up to 4TB, which is not included in this pack.
  • Q: What does the BTR200 remote do? A: It locks the current clip with one press, so loop recording cannot write over it. It has three buttons, and VIOFO's manual lets you set the other two to jobs such as switching the microphone or Wi-Fi on and off or taking a photo. It runs on a CR2032 cell and works within about 5 metres.
  • Q: Should I record at 4K 60fps or 4K 30fps with HDR? A: For daytime runs, 4K 60fps gives smoother footage and more frames to pause on a passing vehicle. HDR balances bright headlights against darker plates at night, but the A329T only allows it at 30fps. If most of your driving is after dark, use 4K 30fps with HDR on. The telephoto records at 2K 30fps either way.
  • Q: Can I add a rear camera to a truck later? A: Yes, where you have somewhere to mount it. The A329T takes a VIOFO rear camera, including the waterproof RWC400. VIOFO lists rear camera cables of 1m, 6m, 8m and 10m as optional accessories, so measure the run before you order.
