Protect a New Car Front and Rear Without Opening the Fuse Box. The Ultimate New Car Dash Cam Pack Records 4K at Both Ends on a VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH, Powered from the OBD-II Port

A new car is the one you least want to pull apart. Parking mode normally means a hardwire kit, a fuse puller and extra hardware in a loom that is still under warranty, so plenty of new owners put the job off and drive around with no camera at all. This pack takes the fuse box out of it. The VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH records 4K front and 4K rear, and the VIOFO OP100 cable powers it, parking mode included, from the OBD-II port under the dash.

For full camera detail, see the VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH dash cam page. Want the full rundown before you buy? Read our hands-on VIOFO A229 Ultra review.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty on the camera with no product registration required, a 12-month warranty on the accessories, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: VIOFO lists the OP100 for petrol and diesel vehicles, so this is not the pack for an EV or hybrid. See the Sentry Mode Dash Cam Pack or the EV & Hybrid Ultimate Protection Pack instead. If dual 4K is more than you need, the New Car Essentials Pack costs less. This one is for petrol and diesel owners who want 4K at both ends.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • The same 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor front and rear, so the rear camera records 4K instead of being the weak link it is on most two-channel kits
  • HDR on both cameras, which keeps a number plate readable when headlights or a low sun hit the lens
  • The VIOFO OP100 plugs into the OBD-II port, so there is no fuse tapping and it comes back out leaving nothing behind
  • Three timer positions on the plug, 3 hours, 24 hours or constant, so the parked window matches where you leave the car
  • A low-voltage cut-off that drops the supply within about 90 seconds of reading below 12V, which is what keeps the starter battery able to start the car
  • A CPL filter at both ends, the CPL-200 from the camera box at the front and the CPL-600 at the rear, which cuts dashboard and rear glass reflections
  • A 256GB VIOFO Industrial card in the pack, the minimum size we suggest for two 4K streams
  • The BTR200 Bluetooth remote, so one press locks a clip without reaching up behind the mirror

Good to Know

  • Not every vehicle keeps the OBD-II port live after locking, and it varies by make and model. Ask us if you are not sure about yours.
  • The OP100 occupies the OBD-II port, so a workshop will need to unplug it to run diagnostics.
  • Both channels record at 30fps. There is no 60fps mode on the A229 Ultra, and its Wi-Fi is dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz, not Wi-Fi 6.
  • Parked recording runs as buffered auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate. The A229 Ultra has no low power parking mode.
  • Two 4K streams fill a card fast. VIOFO estimates roughly 8 to 12 hours of dual 4K on a 256GB card before the oldest clips are overwritten.
  • VIOFO rates the OP100 to 50°C, and a closed car in summer can sit above that. Park in shade where the choice is yours.

Why Power a New Car's Dash Cam from the OBD-II Port?

Parking mode needs power after the ignition is off, and the usual way to get it is a fuse tap: pull a panel, find a constant fuse, add a piggyback and an earth. It works, but it puts extra hardware inside a new car's wiring. Pin 16 of the OBD-II port is already permanently live, and unlike a fuse slot it was designed to be plugged into and unplugged again. The VIOFO OP100 draws from that pin and the two ground pins and nothing else, and it never talks to the car's data network.

The trade-off is that there is no true ignition (ACC) line. The cable reads voltage to work out when the car has stopped, so the switch into parking mode is slightly less immediate than a fuse-tapped kit, and some vehicles cut power to the port once locked. VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH front camera and 4K rear camera from the Ultimate New Car Dash Cam Pack

Top Benefits

  • Wiring left alone: The OP100 takes power from the OBD-II port, so no fuse is tapped and nothing in the loom is modified.
  • Readable plates behind you: The 8MP STARVIS 2 rear sensor records 4K with HDR, so the car behind is identifiable, not just visible.
  • Sharper detail ahead: The front records 4K at 30fps on the same IMX678 sensor, so distant signs and plates hold up.
  • Parked cover that protects the battery: A timer and a low-voltage cut-off stop the draw before the car will not start.
  • Less glare, both ends: A CPL filter on the front and rear lens cuts reflections off the glass on sunny days.
  • Hands off the camera: One press on the BTR200 remote protects the current clip from the loop.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.

How Does the Ultimate New Car Dash Cam Pack Install?

  1. Stick the front camera behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its lead into the headlining, using the trim tool in the camera box.
  2. Run the 6-metre rear camera cable along the headlining to the rear window, fix the rear camera to the glass clear of the demister lines and clip the CPL-600 onto its lens.
  3. Plug the VIOFO OP100 into the OBD-II port, usually under the driver-side dashboard, choose 3 hours, 24 hours or constant on the plug, and run the Type-C parking mode cable up to the camera.
  4. Insert and format the 256GB card in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time zone, GPS and parking mode.
  5. Update the camera firmware, pair the BTR200 remote and stick it where your hand falls.

The OP100 itself takes about five minutes and no tools. Tucking the cables and running the rear camera is the slower part. Turn the camera off before you plug or unplug the rear camera, and use the supplied parking mode cable, because a plain USB lead may not carry the signal the camera needs to enter parking mode.

FAQ

  • Q: Will plugging into the OBD-II port cause a warning light or a fault code? A: No. The OP100 draws power from pin 16 and the ground pins only and never communicates with the vehicle's data network, so it cannot set a fault code or interfere with engine management. It is the most common worry we hear, because the OBD-II port is far better known for diagnostics than as a power source.
  • Q: Can I use this pack in a hybrid or an EV? A: We would not. VIOFO lists the OP100 for petrol and diesel vehicles, and hybrid and EV behaviour depends on how the car manages its OBD-II port. For those cars, look at our EV and hybrid packs, which power the camera from a battery pack or a hardwire kit instead. Email gday@dashcamguys.com.au if you are unsure.
  • Q: How long does it record while my car is parked? A: You choose on the plug: 3 hours, 24 hours or constant. On every setting, the OP100 cuts power within about 90 seconds of reading below 12V, so the parked window ends early if the starter battery runs low. Set 3 hours for the shops and 24 hours or constant for longer stays.
  • Q: What if my car cuts power to the OBD-II port when it is locked? A: Then the camera stops when the port does, and parked recording will not work on this cable. Send your make, model and year to gday@dashcamguys.com.au before you order and we will tell you what we know. The fuse box alternative is the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit, which does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • Q: Is the 256GB card big enough for dual 4K? A: For most drivers, yes. VIOFO estimates roughly 8 to 12 hours of dual 4K on a 256GB card before the oldest clips are overwritten, which covers days of normal commuting. Lock anything you need with the remote so the loop leaves it alone. If you drive long days, the 512GB card doubles that.
  • Q: Is the A229 Ultra in this pack Wi-Fi 6? A: No, and it is a common assumption. The A229 Ultra has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is quick enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app when set to 5GHz. Wi-Fi 6 arrived with the VIOFO A329S series. You can also copy footage to a recent phone over a USB-C cable.
  • Q: Do I need to set up the BTR200 remote? A: Yes, once. Update the camera firmware first, then pair the remote in the VIOFO settings and stick it on the wheel spoke, dash or console with the supplied 3M adhesive. Range is about 5 metres, so it is an in-car control. It runs on a replaceable CR2032 cell.
  • Q: Can I move the pack to my next car? A: Yes. The OP100 unplugs from the OBD-II port in seconds and leaves nothing behind, which also suits leased and novated vehicles. The camera mounts with adhesive pads, and a spare pad is in the camera box for refitting. Check the next car keeps its OBD-II port live when locked.
