Protect a New Car Without Fuse Taps. The New Car Essentials Dash Cam Pack Records 2.7K Front and Rear and Runs Parking Mode From the OBD Port

A dash cam on its own is rarely the whole job. Out of the box it has no memory card, so it records nothing. Run from the cigarette lighter socket, it switches off with the ignition, so it sees nothing in a car park. And in a new car, few owners want fuse taps going in during the first week. The New Car Essentials Pack (NC2) puts the Vantrue E2 (Element 2) front and rear dash cam together with the four add-ons that close those gaps.

Want the full camera detail before you buy? It is all on the Vantrue E2 front and rear dash cam page.

Vantrue E2 front and rear dash cam with remote and phone app, the camera in the New Car Essentials Pack

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty on the camera with no product registration required, a 12-month warranty on the accessories, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: The Vantrue VP04 OBD cable in this pack only runs parking mode in cars that keep the OBD port powered after locking. If yours cuts it, buy the Vantrue E2 on its own with a Vantrue VP05 hardwire kit. For 4K HDR up front, look at the Vantrue E2 Pro. This pack suits a new-car owner who wants front and rear cover without fuse taps.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • The camera, a 128GB card, a CPL filter, a remote and parking mode power arrive in one order, so the Vantrue E2 can record from the day it goes on the glass
  • The Vantrue E2 records 2.7K (1944p) through the front and the rear camera, so the rear is not the weak link in a nose-to-tail claim
  • The Vantrue VP04 plugs into the OBD-II port under the steering column, which gives parking mode constant power with no fuse taps and no multimeter
  • The VP04's inline LED module shows live battery voltage and the cut-off you picked, so the cable stops drawing power before the battery gets too low
  • Unplug the VP04 and nothing about the car's wiring has been altered, which suits leased and novated vehicles
  • The 40mm CPL filter on the front lens cuts the dashboard reflection that no camera setting can remove afterwards
  • The Vantrue BT02 remote locks the current clip with one press, so a near miss is not written over by the loop

Good to Know

  • Some vehicles cut power to the OBD port once the car is locked. In those, the VP04 will not keep the camera recording while parked, and it varies by make.
  • The VP04 occupies the OBD port, so it has to be unplugged, or run through a splitter, when the car is in for diagnostics.
  • 128GB is the smallest practical card for two channels of 2.7K and loops sooner than a bigger one. Vantrue rates the E2 for cards up to 512GB.
  • A CPL filter reduces the light reaching the sensor, and it fits the front lens only. Full 2.7K on both cameras records at 24fps.

Why Does a New Car Need More Than Just the Camera?

A new car needs more than the camera because a dash cam on its own has no storage and no power once the engine is off. Most cameras, the Vantrue E2 included, ship without a memory card. Their car charger plugs into a socket that usually switches off with the ignition, so the camera goes dark in the car park, which is where trolley dents and bumper scrapes happen. The normal fix is a hardwire kit, and that means finding a switched and a constant fuse and fitting fuse taps in a car you have only just collected.

The New Car Essentials Pack takes a different route. The Vantrue VP04 OBD power cable draws constant power from the OBD-II port and feeds the camera 5V over USB-C, with a low-voltage cut-off to protect the starter battery. The trade-off is honest: the VP04 has no true ignition sensing, so the Vantrue E2 enters parking mode after 5 minutes without movement, and the cable does nothing for you in a car that powers its OBD port down when locked.

Top Benefits

  • Recording from day one: The Vantrue 128GB High Endurance microSD card is in the pack, so there is no second order before the camera can record.
  • Cover while you're away: With constant power from the VP04, the Vantrue E2's collision detection, motion detection, low bitrate and low frame rate parking modes can run.
  • Nothing cut or spliced: Parking mode power comes from a plug in the OBD-II port, and it unplugs again.
  • Evidence from behind: 2.7K on the rear camera gives a tailgater's plate the same detail as the car in front.
  • Clearer plates in full sun: The CPL filter cuts the reflected glare that washes out number plates at midday.
  • Hands on the wheel: The BT02 remote locks a clip, takes a snapshot or mutes the microphone without reaching up behind the mirror.
  • Proof of where and how fast: GPS in the E2's mount logs speed and location onto every clip.

How Does the New Car Essentials Pack Install?

  1. Insert the Vantrue 128GB card into the Vantrue E2 and format it in the camera from the System menu.
  2. Clean the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, fit the electrostatic sticker, stick the GPS mount to it and fit the camera to the mount. Fit the CPL filter to the front lens and rotate it until the dashboard reflection fades.
  3. Fix the rear camera near the centre of the rear window, clear of the demister lines, and run the 6m rear camera cable along the headlining with the pry tool and cable clips from the camera box.
  4. Plug the Vantrue VP04 into the OBD-II port, route its 3m lead up to the GPS mount, and pick a low-voltage cut-off level on the LED module.
  5. Stick the BT02 remote where you can reach it, then connect the Vantrue app over the camera's Wi-Fi and set your time zone.

None of this needs a fuse puller or a multimeter. The slow part is the rear cable, which takes longer in a hatchback or SUV because it has to pass through the tailgate seal.

FAQ

  • Q: Will the OBD power cable work in my car? A: It depends on whether your car keeps the OBD-II port powered after you lock it. Many people assume every OBD port is always live, and that is not the case. Some vehicles shut the port down, and in those the Vantrue VP04 cannot keep the camera recording while parked. Email gday@dashcamguys.com.au with your make, model and year before you order and we will tell you what we know about it.
  • Q: Do I use the OBD cable and the car charger together? A: No, you use one or the other. The Vantrue VP04 OBD cable replaces the car charger and is the one to fit if you want parking mode. The car charger still comes in the Vantrue E2 box, so if your car turns out to cut power to the OBD port you can run the camera from the 12V socket and record while driving.
  • Q: Is this pack the Vantrue E2 or the E2 Pro? A: It is the Vantrue E2, also sold as the Element 2. The E2 records 2.7K (1944P) through both the front and rear cameras with WDR, and takes cards up to 512GB. The E2 Pro is a different camera with a 4K front and HDR, and it is not part of this pack. Both have their own pages on our site if you want to compare them.
  • Q: Is a 128GB card enough for the Vantrue E2? A: Yes, it is enough to get going, but it is the smallest practical size for two channels of 2.7K. The camera loops over its oldest footage once the card fills, and a small card reaches that point sooner. Vantrue rates the E2 for cards up to 512GB, so you can move to a 256GB card later. Format the card in the camera before first use.
  • Q: Will the OBD cable flatten my car battery? A: It is built not to. The Vantrue VP04 has a selectable low-voltage cut-off, and its inline LED module shows the live battery voltage and the level you picked. When the battery falls to that level the cable stops powering the camera, which leaves charge to start the car. A car that sits unused for long stretches will reach the cut-off sooner.
  • Q: Does the CPL filter fit the rear camera as well? A: No. The pack has one Vantrue 40mm CPL filter and it goes on the front lens. Rotate it on install until the dashboard reflection fades from the picture. A CPL filter reduces the light reaching the sensor, so if most of your driving is after dark you may prefer to leave it off for those trips.
  • Q: What does the BT02 remote do? A: One press locks the current clip so loop recording does not write over it. It also takes a snapshot and mutes the microphone. The Vantrue BT02 sticks to the wheel spoke, dash or centre console and runs on a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Keep spare coin batteries well away from children, and see the battery warning on this page.
