See the Car Behind You in the Same Detail as the Car in Front. The VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH Dash Cam Records 4K at Both Ends with HDR

Most front and rear dash cams put the good camera at the front. The rear gets fewer pixels, and when the car that hits you is the one behind, that is the footage you end up relying on. The VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH records 4K front and 4K rear on two Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensors, both with HDR, so the plate behind you gets the same 8MP treatment as the road ahead.

Trusted AU store: We're an authorised Australian reseller, shipping from Melbourne within 24 hours*. You get an 18-month warranty with no product registration required, local technical support, and our 30-Day No-Worries returns.

Who This Isn't For: If you want a 60fps front option, Wi-Fi 6 or low power parking modes, the VIOFO A329S 2CH suits you better. If a 2K rear is enough, the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH costs less. For a camera on a ute tray or canopy, choose the VIOFO A229 Ultra W 2CH. The A229 Ultra 2CH is for drivers who want 4K behind as well as ahead.

DCG Highlights

What We Love

  • The same 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor front and rear, so the rear camera records 4K instead of being the weak link it is on most two-channel kits
  • HDR on both cameras, on by default, which keeps a number plate readable when headlights or a low sun hit the lens
  • 4K at 30fps at both ends at the same time, so there is no trade between detail ahead and detail behind
  • A CPL-200 front filter in the box, which cuts dashboard reflections off the windscreen on a bright day
  • Quad-mode GPS in the mount (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo and GLONASS), so every clip carries its time, speed and location
  • Dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi plus a USB-C phone connection, so a clip reaches your phone without pulling the card
  • A cabin camera port ready for the VIOFO RNF210 fisheye cabin camera, if you later want the inside of the car on record
  • A supercapacitor instead of a battery, which copes with a hot parked car far better than lithium cells do

Good to Know

  • Parking mode needs a hardwire kit, sold separately. The VIOFO HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode.
  • Both channels record at 30fps. There is no 60fps mode on the A229 Ultra.
  • Two 4K streams fill a card fast. Plan on a 256GB card as the minimum and 512GB as the comfortable size, not included.
  • The rear lens is 140°, a little narrower than the 160° rear on the A229 Pro and Plus.

Why Does a 4K Rear Camera Matter?

A rear camera earns its keep in the moments you cannot see coming: the rear-end shunt at the lights, the driver who reverses into you in a car park, the tailgater who later says you braked for no reason. In each case the evidence is behind you, and the part that settles it is a number plate.

On most two-channel kits the rear camera has a smaller sensor, so the plate is made of fewer pixels and turns to mush once the car is a few lengths back or the light drops. The VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH puts the same 8MP IMX678 sensor in the rear camera as in the front, recording 3840 x 2160 with HDR, so there are more pixels on the plate and the bright and dark parts of the frame are balanced. The trade-off is data. Two 4K streams are hungry, and the card is what feeds them, so budget for a large high-endurance card from day one.

Top Benefits

  • Readable plates behind you: The 8MP STARVIS 2 rear sensor records 4K with HDR, so the car behind is identifiable, not just visible.
  • Sharper detail ahead: The front records 4K at 30fps on the same IMX678 sensor, so distant signs and plates hold up.
  • Less windscreen glare: The included CPL-200 filter cuts reflections off the glass on sunny days.
  • Clips on your phone fast: 5GHz Wi-Fi and a direct USB-C connection move footage to the VIOFO app without removing the card.
  • Proof of where and how fast: Quad-mode GPS logs speed and location onto every clip.
  • Hands off the camera: Voice control and the optional BTR200 Bluetooth remote lock a clip without reaching for the screen.

How Does the A229 Ultra 2CH Install?

  1. Stick the front camera behind the rear-view mirror and tuck its power lead into the headlining, using the trim tool in the box.
  2. Run the 6-metre rear camera cable along the headlining and down to the rear window, then fix the rear camera to the glass clear of the demister lines.
  3. Power it from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it to the fuse box with the HK4 kit if you want parking mode.
  4. Insert and format a microSD card in the camera, then pair the VIOFO app to set the time zone, GPS and recording options.

Turn the camera off before you plug or unplug the rear camera. The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the trim tool, while hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, which a circuit tester makes far easier.

FAQ

  • Q: Is the VIOFO A229 Ultra Wi-Fi 6? A: No, and it is a common assumption. The A229 Ultra has dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is quick enough to preview and download clips in the VIOFO app when set to 5GHz. Wi-Fi 6 arrived with the VIOFO A329S series. You can also copy footage straight to a recent phone over a USB-C cable, with no Wi-Fi involved at all.
  • Q: Can the A229 Ultra record at 60fps? A: No. Every recording mode on the A229 Ultra runs at 30fps, front and rear. The Ultra's selling point is a second 4K stream, not a faster frame rate. If a 60fps front option matters more to you than a 4K rear, look at the VIOFO A329S 2CH, which records 4K 60fps at the front with HDR off and 2K at the rear.
  • Q: Can I add a cabin camera to the A229 Ultra 2CH later? A: Yes. The front unit has an interior camera port, and VIOFO lists the RNF210 210° infrared fisheye cabin camera for the A229 Ultra with no firmware change needed. With it connected, the front and rear stay at 4K 30fps and the cabin records 1080p. Turn the camera off before plugging it in. If you already know you want the cabin, the 3CH kit includes it.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit does the A229 Ultra need for parking mode? A: The VIOFO HK4 USB-C hardwire kit is the usual choice. It powers the camera from the fuse box when the car is off and cuts power before your battery drops too low. The HK4 does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, so parked recording runs as buffered auto event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate. For long stretches parked, a VIOFO battery pack takes the load off the car battery.
  • Q: Does the HK6 give the A229 Ultra Low Power Parking Mode? A: No. VIOFO lists the HK6 as compatible, but the A229 Ultra's parking modes stay the same three: auto event detection, time-lapse and low bitrate. The low power modes the HK6 is known for belong to the VIOFO A329S series. On the A229 Ultra, what the HK6 adds is a live vehicle battery voltage reading on the video stamp.
  • Q: What size memory card should I get for dual 4K? A: Treat 256GB as the minimum and 512GB as the comfortable size. Two 4K streams write a lot of data, and VIOFO estimates roughly 8 to 12 hours of dual 4K on a 256GB card before the oldest clips are overwritten. Use a high-endurance card such as the VIOFO Industrial range, because ordinary cards are the most common cause of lost footage.
  • Q: Will the A229 Ultra cope with an Australian summer? A: Yes, within limits. It uses a supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery and VIOFO rates it from -20°C to 65°C. Mount it behind the rear-view mirror where it sits in shade. VIOFO's manual suggests time-lapse for parking in hot sun and turning the camera off if the cabin goes above 60°C.
