Why Does a Mirror Dash Cam Fix a Blocked Rear View?

A mirror dash cam moves the rear camera outside the things that block your view, then shows its feed on the mirror. A conventional rear camera still shoots through the rear windscreen, so tint, the demister lines, headrests and cargo all sit between the lens and the road.

Mount the G900 Pro's rear camera outside, above the number plate or on the canopy, and the mirror shows the road instead of the load. You get a usable rear view while driving as well as a recording afterwards, which is why owners of utes, vans and loaded wagons rarely go back. The trade-off is the install: the rear camera cable has to run from the mirror to the back of the vehicle, and on a ute that means getting it out to the tray or canopy neatly. Plan the route before you start pulling trim.

How Does the WOLFBOX G900 Pro Install?

  1. Strap the mirror over your existing rear-view mirror with the rubber straps, or fit a vehicle-specific WOLFBOX OEM-style mirror bracket for a firmer mount.
  2. Run the rear camera cable along the headlining to the back of the vehicle and fix the rear camera outside, usually above the number plate. Tape over the cable connectors, because WOLFBOX notes they are not waterproof.
  3. For reversing guide lines, connect the rear camera's red wire to the reverse light's positive terminal.
  4. Plug in the GPS module, then power the mirror from the 12V socket with the included car charger, or hardwire it for parking mode.

The rear camera run and the reverse light connection are the slow parts. If fitment is a barrier, see the note below on finding a local installer.

  • Q: Is this the Australian right-hand-drive version? A: Yes. We stock the right-hand-drive build, with the front lens on the driver's side of the unit. On the international left-hand-drive build the lens sits on the passenger side, which puts it towards the kerb in an Australian car. Overseas marketplace stock is usually the international build.
  • Q: Which hardwire kit do I need for parking mode? A: A G900 Pro-specific WOLFBOX kit, not the universal WOLFBOX one. Choose the 4A fuse tap kit for a fuse box install or the OBD kit for a no-tools fit.   • Q: Will a 12-inch mirror fit my car? A: It straps over most factory mirrors in cars, utes, SUVs, vans and four-wheel drives. In a smaller cabin it can crowd the sun visor, and a mirror with a sensor housing behind it suits the OEM-style bracket better than the straps.   • Q: Can I still use it as a normal mirror? A: Yes. With the screen off, the glass works as an ordinary rear-view mirror. Most owners leave the camera view on once they get used to it, because it shows a wider view behind than the glass does, with no headrests or cargo in the way.

  • Q: How good is the rear camera at night? A: It is clear enough to drive with and to record what happens behind you under street lighting. In near total darkness the 2.5K rear picture turns grainier than the 4K front, which is normal for a rear module this size. Reversing lights help when you are backing up.
