THINKWARE U3000 Review: What We Would Fit Instead in Australia

Short answer: the THINKWARE U3000 is a genuinely good 4K dash cam, and this review is written for Australian drivers trying to work out whether to chase one down here. It records 4K up front and 2K out the back. We do not stock it, so if that specification is what you are after, the camera we would fit instead is the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH, with the VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH sitting above it as a clear step up.

We do not stock the THINKWARE U3000, and we are not going to quote you a price we did not set. What we can tell you is what is in each box. THINKWARE Australia lists the U3000D64 kit as including the hard wiring kit and a 64GB card. Neither VIOFO includes either, so if you are pricing them against each other, add an HK4 hardwire kit and a good high endurance card to the VIOFO side before you compare. It is also worth knowing the difference between genuine Australian stock and grey imports before you chase a cheaper number somewhere else, because the warranty path is not the same.

Methodology note: every specification above is published by the manufacturer and we checked each one against the brand's own site rather than trusting the spec sheet a retailer typed up. The Dash Cam Guys has not run a THINKWARE U3000 and a VIOFO A229 Pro side by side under identical conditions, so nothing here is a Dash Cam Guys test result, and because we have no matched test footage we have not scored either camera.

Where the THINKWARE U3000 genuinely leads

Three things stand out, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Radar parking surveillance. THINKWARE builds a radar sensor into the U3000 that watches for movement near the car while it is parked, so the camera can wake for a person walking past rather than waiting for a bump. The VIOFO relies on motion in the video frame and impact detection instead. If your main worry is a car park scrape or someone circling the vehicle overnight, that is a real difference in approach.

A three year warranty. THINKWARE Australia publishes three years on the U3000 camera hardware. VIOFO publishes 18 months. Both sit on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights, which apply regardless of any voluntary warranty, but the longer voluntary term is still worth something.

Everything in one box. The U3000D64 kit arrives with the hard wiring kit and a card. There is less to think about at checkout. The U3000 also has the wider front field of view, 152 degrees against 140, so it takes in a little more of the kerb either side.

Where the A229 Pro pulls ahead

A newer rear sensor. The U3000 pairs a STARVIS 2 front camera with an older STARVIS IMX335 rear. The A229 Pro uses STARVIS 2 on both channels. Rear footage is usually where you catch a tailgater or a rear ender, and the rear camera is often the weakest link on a two channel setup. HDR on both channels. VIOFO lists HDR front and rear on the A229 Pro. THINKWARE reserves HDR for the U3000 PRO rather than the base U3000. HDR is the camera balancing a bright sky against a shaded number plate in the same frame, which is exactly the problem on an Australian afternoon. A wider rear view. 160 degrees on the VIOFO rear against 128 degrees on the THINKWARE rear is a noticeable difference in how much of the lane either side you keep in frame.

Bigger cards and a screen. 512GB against 256GB means longer before the camera loops back over old footage. Loop recording is when the camera writes over the oldest clips once the card fills up. The 2.4 inch screen also lets you check framing at install time without pairing a phone.

What if you want to go past the U3000?

The A229 Pro matches the U3000 format for format, 4K front and 2K rear. If you would rather not settle for 2K on the rear channel at all, the VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH is the step up.

The Ultra records 4K at 30 frames per second on both the front and the rear, both on the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor, with HDR on both channels. In plain English, that makes the rear channel four times the resolution of the U3000's 2K rear. That is the difference between reading a number plate two cars back and guessing at it, which is exactly the sort of proof you want when someone runs into the back of you and then changes their story. It keeps the 2.4 inch screen, the 512GB card ceiling and the supercapacitor rated from minus 20 to 65 degrees Celsius, so nothing you get on the Pro is traded away.

What about parking mode in an Australian summer?

All three cameras use a supercapacitor instead of a rechargeable lithium battery. A supercapacitor stores a small amount of energy to close the last file safely when power drops, and it copes with heat differently to a lithium cell. VIOFO publishes an operating range of minus 20 to 65 degrees Celsius for both the A229 Pro and the A229 Ultra. That is a component choice and a rating, not a promise that a camera will never fail in a hot car.

Either way, parking mode needs constant power. The U3000D64 kit includes its hard wiring kit. For either VIOFO you add an HK4 with a low voltage cut off, which stops the camera drawing your car battery below a set threshold. Pro Tip: whichever camera you land on, buy a genuine high endurance microSD card and replace it every 12 to 18 months. Card failure is the most common reason people open their app after an incident and find nothing usable. Our microSD card findings explain what we see come back through returns.

What we could not verify

Being straight with you about the gaps matters more than filling them in.

  • VIOFO does not publish a field of view, a parking mode list, a GPS specification or a hardwire kit pairing for the A229 Ultra in the same form it does for the A229 Pro, so those cells read "Not published" rather than carrying a number we cannot stand behind.

Our verdict

The close match: VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH. This is the one we would put most drivers in. It matches the U3000 where it counts, 4K up front and 2K out the back, then adds the current STARVIS 2 generation on the rear channel as well as the front, HDR on both channels, a wider rear view and 512GB of card support. The step up: VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH. Dual 4K, front and rear, both on the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 with HDR. The rear channel is four times the resolution of the U3000's 2K rear, for about fifty dollars more than the Pro. If the rear camera is the one you are counting on, this is the one to get. Buy the THINKWARE U3000 instead if: radar based parking surveillance is the feature you actually want, you value the longer voluntary warranty, and you would rather have the hard wiring kit and card in the box.
