Is the VIOFO A119 V3 Still Worth Buying in 2026?
For years the VIOFO A119 V3 was the default answer to "what is a good, affordable front dash cam?" It is still listed on VIOFO's store, it still turns up cheaply second-hand, and plenty of Australian cars still have one behind the mirror. So is it still worth buying in 2026?
The short answer: for most people buying new, no. The VIOFO A119 Mini 2 dash cam does everything the V3 does with a newer sensor, double the frame rate and Wi-Fi. The V3 still makes sense in a couple of specific situations, covered below. If you want 4K in the same compact shape, the VIOFO A119M Pro dash cam is the step up. For transparency, we do not sell the A119 V3 new, although we still stock its GPS mount and hardwire kit for owners. The current models are all in our range of VIOFO dash cams in Australia.
What does the VIOFO A119 V3 still do well?
Straight from VIOFO's current spec sheet:
- A taller-than-usual 2K frame. It records 2560 x 1600 at 30fps. That is 160 more vertical pixels than a standard 2560 x 1440 image, so a little more of the scene fits top to bottom.
- Buffered parking mode. Auto event detection, time-lapse and low bitrate recording, with footage from just before an event.
- GPS logging through the GPS mount, for speed and location on your footage.
- A supercapacitor instead of a battery, rated by VIOFO to operate from -20°C to 65°C.
- HDR support and a bright F1.6 lens with a 140° field of view.
None of that has stopped working. A well-installed A119 V3 still records usable front footage.
Where does the A119 V3 show its age?
- The sensor. It uses Sony's first-generation STARVIS IMX335. Current VIOFO models use STARVIS 2, which is the bigger reason newer cameras cope better at night.
- No Wi-Fi. VIOFO lists Wi-Fi as not supported, so there is no phone app. To see or save a clip you pull the card or use the screen.
- 30 frames per second. The A119 Mini 2 records 2K at 60fps, which helps freeze fast-moving plates.
- 256GB card limit, where newer VIOFOs take 512GB.
- Mini-USB power. It uses the older Mini HK3 hardwire kit rather than the USB-C kits of the current range.
- No voice control, which the Mini 2 and VS1 Mini both have.

Who should still buy an A119 V3?
- You are replacing one like for like. If your car already has the V3's GPS mount and a Mini HK3 wired in, a replacement V3 drops straight into the existing install.
- You want no wireless connection at all. Some fleet and privacy-minded buyers prefer a camera with no Wi-Fi.
- You find a genuine unit cheaply. Be careful second-hand and from overseas sellers: warranty cover depends on who you buy from. We explain why in VIOFO warranty in Australia: genuine vs grey imports.
What we would buy instead
- The closest upgrade: the VIOFO A119 Mini 2. Same idea, STARVIS 2 sensor, 2K at 60fps, Wi-Fi and voice control. Full detail in our A119 Mini 2 review.
- If you want no screen at all: the VIOFO VS1 Mini. See the VS1 review.
- If you want 4K up front: the VIOFO A119M Pro. See the A119M Pro review.
- If you want a rear camera too: compare the range in which VIOFO dash cam to buy.
Already own an A119 V3?
Keep it running well:
- Use a proper card no larger than 256GB, and format it in the camera regularly. Our VIOFO SD card guide explains which cards hold up.
- Replace a lost or broken GPS mount with the A119 V3 GPS mount.
- Want parking mode? The Mini HK3 hardwire kit is the one VIOFO lists for the V3. Our VIOFO hardwire kit guide covers the full range.
Common questions
Does the VIOFO A119 V3 have Wi-Fi?

What is the largest SD card for the A119 V3?
VIOFO lists up to 256GB.
Which hardwire kit fits the A119 V3?
The Mini HK3, which uses a Mini-USB plug. The newer USB-C kits will not fit.
Is the A119 V3 discontinued?
Not as of 17 September 2026. It is still listed on VIOFO's own store, although it is no longer VIOFO's newest front camera.
Is the A119 V3 better than the A119 Mini 2?
Only in its slightly taller 2560 x 1600 frame and larger screen. On sensor generation, frame rate, Wi-Fi, voice control and card capacity, the Mini 2 is ahead.
