Who This Isn't For: The E1 Pro records the road ahead only, with no way to add a rear camera. For the road behind as well, the Vantrue E2 Pro records 4K front and 2K rear. If 1080p is enough, the Vantrue E1 Lite is the cheaper camera in a near-identical small body. The E1 Pro suits drivers who want sharp front footage from a camera that stays out of sight.

• Parking mode needs constant power from a hardwire kit, sold separately. Switching into parking mode when the ignition goes off (ACC mode) needs a kit with an ACC lead, such as the Vantrue VP05.
• Vantrue rates the E1 Pro from -20°C to 60°C. Above that range collision detection switches itself off, and Vantrue advises turning the camera off when parked in high heat. A car in full summer sun can pass 60°C inside.
• Every resolution records at 30fps. There is no 60fps mode.
• The 1.54-inch screen is fine for checking the picture, but the Vantrue app is the easier place to change settings.

Why Do Number Plates Blur on Dash Cam Footage?

Number plates blur because a dash cam sets its exposure for the whole scene, not for the small, reflective plate in the middle of it. A plate is a tiny part of the frame, it is usually moving, and its white background bounces back sunlight and headlights. The camera balances everything else first, so the plate can come out smeared or washed out, and zooming into a paused clip only makes the smear bigger.

The Vantrue E1 Pro attacks that from two sides. 4K gives each plate more pixels to begin with, and PlatePix is an alternative image setting that prioritises plate clarity and reduces blur caused by lighting. The trade-off is in Vantrue's own manual: PlatePix brightens the foreground but can make the overall picture darker, so Vantrue suggests scheduling it with the timer, or turning it off, in low light. At night every dash cam is also limited by your own headlight beam, and 4K does not change that.

How Does the Vantrue E1 Pro Install?

1. Insert a microSD card and format it in the camera under System, then Format Micro SD card.
2. Clean the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror, fit the electrostatic sticker, then peel the tape off the GPS mount and press the mount and camera onto the sticker.
3. Plug the car charger's built-in USB-C cable into the port on the mount. The USB-C port on the camera body is for data and the LTE module only.
4. Tuck the 3.5m cable into the headlining and down the pillar with the included pry tool, and use the cable clip to keep it tidy.
5. Connect the Vantrue app over the camera's Wi-Fi, pick your time zone, and let GPS set the date and time.

With no rear camera, there is no cable to run the length of the car, so the plug-in install is short. Parking mode is the bigger job, because hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse.
