Most front and rear dash cams save their good camera for the front. The rear gets 1080p, which shows that a car hit you but often not whose car it was, once it sits a few lengths back or drives off. Rear-end crashes, tailgaters and a car reversing into you in a car park all happen behind you. The Vantrue S1 Pro Max (Sonnet 1 Pro Max) records 4K through the front and 4K through an IP67 rear camera, each on its own Sony STARVIS 2 sensor.

Good to Know

Every parking mode needs constant power from a hardwire kit, sold separately. Vantrue recommends its own ACC hardwire kit, because other brands can place the ACC detection pin differently.
Every mode records at 30fps. There is no 60fps option, unlike the S1 Pro.
Two 4K streams fill a card quickly. Vantrue rates the S1 Pro Max for cards up to 1TB, and we would size it at 512GB or more.
Vantrue rates it from -20°C to 60°C and recommends collision detection in hot weather, and turning it off once the cabin reaches 60°C.

Why Does a 4K Rear Camera Matter?

A 4K rear camera matters because the rear lens is just as wide as the front, so a lower resolution spreads fewer pixels over the same scene. Most two-channel dash cams record 1080p behind, which is fine for the car touching your bumper. The problem starts a few lengths back. A tailgater, a car that swerves behind you, or a driver who clips you and keeps going can end up as a car-shaped smudge with no readable plate.

The Vantrue S1 Pro Max records the rear in 4K on its own STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor, the same as the front, so a plate further back has four times the pixels of a 1080p rear to land on. The trade-off is storage and frame rate. Two 4K streams fill a card far faster than 2.7K and 1080p, every mode runs at 30fps, and Vantrue notes PlatePix can make the overall picture darker in low light, which is why it has its own timer.

How Does the Vantrue S1 Pro Max Install?

Insert a microSD card and format it in the camera before your first drive.
Clean the windscreen, fit the electrostatic sticker beside the rear-view mirror, then stick the GPS mount to it and fit the camera.
Mount the RC11 rear camera inside the rear glass or outside the car, and run the 6m rear camera cable to the front camera, using the pry tool and cable clips in the box.
Plug the car charger's built-in 3.5m USB-C cable into the mount, or hardwire it with a Vantrue ACC hardwire kit if you want parking mode to start when you switch off.
Connect the Vantrue app over the camera's Wi-Fi, set your time zone, and let GPS set the date and time.

The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the pry tool in the box. Hardwiring is the bigger job, because it means finding a switched and a constant fuse. An outside rear camera adds a cable entry point that has to stay watertight, so take your time with it, or book an independent installer.

Q: Does the S1 Pro Max record 60fps? A: No. Every mode on the S1 Pro Max records at 30fps, including 4K front and rear. If frame rate matters more to you than rear resolution, the cheaper S1 Pro has a 1440p at 60fps front mode, which keeps fast cross traffic sharper frame by frame. The Max puts its effort into resolution instead, with 4K at both ends and PlatePix processing.
Q: What size memory card does the S1 Pro Max need? A: Vantrue rates it for microSD cards from 32GB to 1TB, rated U3, Class 10 and A2, and none comes in the box. Two 4K streams fill a card quickly, so we would start at 512GB, and our Vantrue microSD card guide explains why a high endurance card matters. Format the card in the camera before first use, and again about once a month.
Q: Is the S1 Pro Max rear camera waterproof? A: Yes. The RC11 rear camera that comes with our 4K front and 4K rear kit is rated IP67, so it can mount outside on a ute canopy, van or tailgate, and its cable is the waterproof type. Seal the point where the cable enters the body. The RC07 rear camera from the S1 Pro does not fit the Max, so an upgrade needs the new rear camera.
Q: Will parking mode work plugged into the cigarette lighter? A: Not in most cars, because the socket switches off with the ignition and the S1 Pro Max has a supercapacitor rather than a battery. Every parking mode needs constant power from a hardwire kit. Without an ACC lead, Auto mode starts parking mode after 5 minutes without movement. With a Vantrue ACC hardwire kit, it starts when you switch the car off.
Q: What does PlatePix do, and should I leave it on? A: PlatePix is a video mode that prioritises number plate clarity and reduces blur from lighting, and it is off by default. Vantrue notes that it brightens the foreground but can make the overall picture darker, so it suggests turning it off or scheduling it in low light. The PlatePix timer in the record menu switches it on and off at the times you set.
Q: How many seconds before an event does motion detection keep? A: Ten seconds, according to Vantrue's V1.4 manual. When motion is detected, the S1 Pro Max records 30 seconds and adds the 10 seconds before it, saving a 40-second clip to the parking folder. Vantrue's product page quotes 15 seconds, which is the S1 Pro's figure, so we go by the manual. Motion detection needs the camera powered on, through a hardwire kit.
Q: Does the S1 Pro Max need the LTE module? A: No. The camera records, connects to your phone over Wi-Fi and logs GPS without it. The optional Vantrue LTE module (LT01), used with your own SIM card, adds alert notifications, remote viewing and automatic collision video uploads, with a daily data limit you set in the LTE menu. Without it, you reach the camera over Wi-Fi when you are near the car.
