Who This Isn't For: If you need to read the plate of a car well behind you, the 1080p rear is the limit. • Every parking mode needs constant power from a hardwire kit, sold separately. Vantrue recommends its own ACC hardwire kit, because other brands can place the ACC detection pin differently.
• The RC04 rear camera in the box sticks to the inside of the rear glass. For mounting outside, such as on a ute canopy, Vantrue offers the optional RC07 waterproof rear camera.
• Vantrue rates the S1 Pro from -20°C to 60°C and advises turning it off once the cabin reaches 60°C, so use collision detection, or switch off, on the hottest days.
• Parking clips share the normal video folder with your driving footage, so save anything important before loop recording writes over it.

Why Is a 1080p Rear Camera Enough for Most Drivers?

A 1080p rear camera is enough for most drivers because the car you need on record is usually right behind you. In a nose-to-tail crash the other car fills a large part of the rear frame, so its plate, driver and position are clear without 4K. Where 1080p struggles is distance. A wide 165° rear lens spreads its pixels across the whole back window, so a car two or three lengths back can be identifiable as a car without its plate being readable.

The Vantrue S1 Pro puts its detail where most evidence comes from, with a 2.7K STARVIS 2 front camera and a 1440p at 60fps mode for fast cross traffic. The trade-off is at the back. If your worry is a tailgater hanging back or a car swerving behind you at highway speed, a 4K rear records more of that, which is why the S1 Pro Max exists. Storage is the tax you pay for detail, and the S1 Pro charges less of it.

How Does the Vantrue S1 Pro Install?

1. Insert a microSD card and format it in the camera before your first drive.
2. Power the camera on and check the front and rear views, then clean the windscreen, fit the electrostatic sticker beside the rear-view mirror and stick the GPS mount to it.
3. Fix the rear camera to the rear window, turn on Rotate Display if it ended up upside down, and run the rear camera cable along the headlining to the front camera, using the pry tool and cable clips in the box.
4. Plug the car charger's built-in 3.5m USB-C cable into the mount, or hardwire it with a Vantrue ACC hardwire kit if you want parking mode to start when you switch off.
5. Connect the Vantrue app over the camera's Wi-Fi, set your time zone, and let GPS set the date and time.

The plug-in route needs nothing beyond the pry tool in the box. Hardwiring is the bigger job, because it means finding a switched and a constant fuse. On a wagon, SUV or ute canopy, check the rear cable reaches before you start, and add the Vantrue 9m rear camera cable if it does not.
