Why Does a Cabin Camera Need a Fisheye Lens and Infrared?

A cabin camera has a harder job than a road camera. It sits only centimetres from the people it records, so a normal lens sees the front seats and little else. The cabin is also at its darkest exactly when it matters most: late at night, in a car park, or with passengers in the back. A camera with no light to work with records a black frame, however good the sensor is.

The VIOFO A329S 3CH cabin camera deals with both problems. Its 210° fisheye lens covers the front and back seats from one position on the windscreen, and it rotates on its mount so you can aim it where you need it. Its infrared LEDs light the cabin for the camera, and on Auto they switch on as the light fades. The trade-off is in the picture itself. Infrared footage is black and white, and a fisheye view bends straight lines towards the edges, which is fine for seeing who did what but no help for reading anything outside the car.

How Does the VIOFO A329S 3CH Install?

Stick the front camera and GPS mount behind the rear-view mirror and tuck the power lead into the headlining with the trim tool in the box.
Fix the cabin camera to the windscreen where it can see the whole interior, then, with the front camera switched off, connect it using the 1m cabin camera cable.
Run the rear camera cable along the headlining to the rear window and fix the rear camera to the glass, clear of the demister lines.
Power it from the 12V socket with the included dual USB-C car charger, or hardwire it with the HK6 kit for the full set of parking modes, then format a microSD card and pair the VIOFO app to set the time, GPS and parking options.

The cabin camera is the quick part, because it sits near the front unit on a short cable. The rear cable run takes the most time. Hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse, and a circuit tester makes that far easier.

Q: Does the A329S 3CH record 4K at 60fps? A: Not with all three cameras running, and that is the most common surprise with this model. In 3-channel mode the front records 4K at 30fps, with the rear and cabin at 2K 30fps. If you want 60fps on some drives, switch the cabin camera off and HDR off in the settings, and the front can record 4K at 60fps alongside the rear.
Q: Can the cabin camera see in the dark? A: Yes. It has infrared LEDs you can set to On, Off or Auto. On Auto the camera turns them on as the cabin gets dark, and the footage switches to black and white. With them off it relies on whatever light is in the car, so leave them on Auto if you drive at night.
Q: Can I use the A329S 3CH in a rideshare car? A: Check your state's rules before you fit it. Q: Which hardwire kit do I need? A: The VIOFO HK6 hardwire kit. It is the kit built for the A329 series, and it enables Low Power Impact Detection, voltage cut-off and a live battery voltage readout in the VIOFO app. The older HK4 powers the standard parking modes but does not offer Low Power Parking Mode, which is why we pair the HK6 with the A329S.
Q: What memory card or SSD should I use? A: Three channels fill storage fast, so treat a 256GB card as the minimum and 512GB as the sensible choice. For weeks of footage, add an external SSD of up to 4TB, but keep a microSD card in as well, because Low Power and Hybrid parking clips can only be written to the card.
Q: Can I start with the 1CH or 2CH and add a cabin camera later? A: Yes. The VIOFO RCC360 cabin camera plugs into the same front unit, so a 1CH or 2CH can grow into three channels. The 3CH is simply the same front camera with the rear and cabin cameras already in the box, which saves buying the parts one at a time.
