Good to Know

• Some vehicles cut power to the OBD port once the car is locked, and some EVs and hybrids do not give you a usable port at all. In those cars the VP04 cannot run parking mode. Our OBD2 dash cam power cable guide explains how to check.
• The VP04 has no ignition (ACC) wire. The S1 Pro therefore starts parking mode after 5 minutes without movement, or with a long press of the button, not the moment you switch off.
• The cable occupies the OBD port, so unplug it, or use a splitter, when the car goes in for diagnostics or a service.
• A CPL filter reduces the light reaching the sensor. Take it off if your night footage looks too dark.

Why Does the 12V Battery Matter in an EV or Hybrid?

The 12V battery matters in an EV or hybrid because it, not the large drive battery, is what powers a parked dash cam. Parking mode keeps the camera powered while the car is off, and a voltage cut-off is meant to stop it before the battery gets too low. In an EV or hybrid that 12V battery is usually smaller and recharges on the car's own schedule, so a cut-off set low leaves very little margin. Our rule of thumb is not to let it sit under 12V, which we explain in our guide to whether a dash cam will drain an EV battery.

The Vantrue VP04 in this pack lets you pick the 12.4V level and shows the live voltage on its LED. The Vantrue S1 Pro adds collision detection with a Power Saving setting, which switches the camera off until a knock wakes it. The trade-off is coverage: a higher cut-off ends parked recording sooner, and Power Saving records after the knock, not before it.

How Does the EV & Hybrid Essential Pack Install?

1. Insert the Vantrue 128GB card and format it in the camera.
2. Clean the windscreen, fit the electrostatic sticker beside the rear-view mirror and stick the GPS mount to it. Fit the CPL filter to the front lens and rotate it until the dashboard reflection fades.
3. Fix the rear camera to the inside of the rear glass and run its cable along the headlining, using the pry tool and cable clips from the camera box.
4. Set the cut-off switch on the Vantrue VP04 (we suggest 12.4V in an EV or hybrid), plug it into the OBD-II port, usually under the dash near the steering column, and route the 3m USB-C lead up to the mount. Keep it clear of the pedals, the steering column and the airbags.
5. Choose a parking mode in the camera menu, then park overnight and check in the morning that the camera went into parking mode and what the LED reads.

No tools are needed beyond the pry tool in the camera box. The power side takes minutes, and most of the job is routing the rear camera cable neatly.
