Who This Isn't For: If the camera will never leave the windscreen, the handheld mount and tripod stand are extras you will not use. The Vantrue E360 Plus has the same camera and rear camera without them, and the Vantrue E360 drops the rear camera too. For distant number plates, the Vantrue N4 Pro S has a 4K front. The ACE suits drivers who want one camera for the car and for outside it.

Good to Know

• Handheld mode records the front and cabin lenses only, so the rear camera sits out while the camera is on the handle. Recording does not start by itself in handheld mode, so tap record on the screen.
• Vantrue marks the camera and the handheld mount as not waterproof. The handle holds lithium cells, so bring it inside rather than leave it in a hot car.
• Alongside the 5.2K panorama, the rear camera records at 1440P. Parking mode needs a Vantrue hardwire kit or OBD cable, sold separately.

Why Does a Dash Cam Need a Handheld Mode?

A dash cam only records where it is mounted, and the Vantrue E360 ACE's handheld mount lets you take the camera to whatever you need to record. A lot of what matters after a bump in a car park, or before a hire car goes back, sits outside the car: a scraped panel, a dent, where the other vehicle ended up. Normally that means switching to your phone. The E360 ACE lifts off its split mount onto a battery handle and keeps recording a 360° view, so one slow walk around the car covers every side.

The trade-off is that handheld mode records the front and cabin lenses only, and neither the camera nor the handle is waterproof. Because the E360 ACE also records the cabin, rideshare drivers in Victoria and Queensland should note that transport rules restrict cameras that record inside the car. How Does the Vantrue E360 ACE Install?

1. Insert a U3 microSD card, power the camera on and set the language and time zone before it goes on the glass.
2. Choose a spot in the centre of the windscreen, at least 40cm from each A-pillar. Clean the glass, fit the electrostatic sticker and press the adhesive GPS mount base onto it.
3. Fit the rear camera in the centre of the rear window, clear of the demister lines, and run the 6m rear cable along the headlining to the rear camera port on the camera body. The included pry tool helps tuck it in.
4. Slide the camera onto the mount, plug the car charger into the cigarette lighter socket and tuck its 3.5m cable along the headlining and down the A-pillar.
5. For handheld use, lift the camera off the mount, fit it to the handheld mount, swipe up for the quick menu, choose handheld record mode and tap record.

The rear cable is the longest part of the job, because it runs the length of the cabin. In a hatch, wagon or SUV, plan where the cable crosses from the roof to the tailgate before you start. Parking mode is the other bigger job, because hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse. The Vantrue VP04 OBD power cable avoids the fuse box in vehicles that keep the OBD port live when parked.
