Who This Isn't For: The N2X has no rear camera and cannot take one. If you want the road behind on record too, the Vantrue N4 Pro adds a rear camera to the front and cabin. Victoria's rideshare rules call for a front-facing, video-only camera, such as the Vantrue E1 Pro. The N2X suits drivers elsewhere whose main risk sits inside the car.

• Parking mode needs constant power from a Vantrue hardwire kit or OBD cable, sold separately. Vantrue warns that other brands' kits may not trigger parking mode correctly.
• The cabin camera tops out at 1080p in every mode, and its night footage is black and white while the infrared LEDs are on.

Why Does the Vantrue N2X Cabin Camera Use Infrared?

The Vantrue N2X cabin camera uses infrared so it can still record faces after dark, when there is almost no visible light inside the car. A camera sensor needs light to build a picture. On a night shift the cabin is lit by little more than the dash and passing headlights, so an ordinary cabin camera records grainy shapes, or nothing useful at all.

The N2X fixes that with four infrared LEDs beside the cabin lens. They light the cabin with infrared that the camera sees clearly and your passengers barely notice, and on Auto they switch on as the light drops. The trade-off is colour. While the LEDs are running the cabin footage is black and white, and at 1080p it records who did what rather than fine detail such as the text on a card.

Does the Vantrue N2X Replace the N2 Pro?

Yes. The Vantrue N2X is the model that replaces the Vantrue N2 Pro, and it is the one to buy if you are replacing an N2 Pro. It keeps the idea that made the N2 Pro popular with rideshare drivers, one camera body filming the road and the passengers, and brings the front camera and the GPS up to date.

How Does the Vantrue N2X Install?

1. Insert a microSD card, power the camera on through the GPS mount, and set the date, time zone and language before it goes on the glass.
2. Clean the windscreen beside the rear-view mirror, fit the electrostatic sticker, and press the adhesive GPS mount onto it so the front camera faces the road and the cabin camera faces the seats.
3. Push the camera onto the mount and plug the car charger into the power port on the GPS mount.
4. Tuck the 3.5m charger cable along the headlining and down the pillar with the pry tool, and use the cable clip to keep it tidy.

With no rear camera there is no cable to run the length of the car, so the car charger install is short. Parking mode is the bigger job, because hardwiring means finding a switched and a constant fuse. The Vantrue VP04 OBD power cable avoids the fuse box in vehicles that keep the OBD port live.
