The Sealion 7 Reality Check: Is the Factory Dash Camera Actually There?

If you look behind your rearview mirror, you’ll see a neat plastic housing. In overseas markets, this holds a factory dash cam. In Australian Sealion 7 deliveries, the hardware has been removed. While the wiring is usually tucked and taped inside that shroud, the actual camera module isn't there.

The "OEM Upgrade" Trap: You can buy a cheap "plug-and-play" module online (look for the white/cream Fakra plug for the Sealion 7 - the blue ones from the Atto 3 won't fit!). However, even if you DIY this module, you are still limited to basic 1080p footage, no audio recording, no rear coverage, and zero parking protection.

The factory module will not help you if someone hits the car while it is parked, or if you need to read a number plate at night.

The 12V Myth: Protecting Your Sealion's "Brain"

Many new owners worry that a dash cam will "brick" their high-voltage battery. Simply put: it won’t. While the giant Blade Battery drives the wheels, your car has a standard 12V auxiliary battery that runs the electronics such as radio, interior lights, and surprise, any dash cam! If this 12V battery goes flat, the car won't even unlock the doors.

Our Technical Note: Most forums suggest setting your Low Voltage Cut-off (LVC) to 11.6V to get more recording time. Do not do this in a BYD. The Sealion 7’s Battery Management System (BMS) is sensitive; we recommend never using the the Low Voltage 12V system unless your chosen dash camera specifically features 'low voltage parking mode'. This is a relatively new feature, not many cameras feature it yet. For ultimate peace of mind - pair your dash camera with its own dedicated backup battery such as the VIOFO BP100.

Hybrid Parking Mode: The EV Game-Changer

As mentioned above, for Sealion 7 owners, we exclusively recommend dash cams with Hybrid Parking Mode (aka Low Power Parking Mode). Unlike older cameras that draw constant power (5W+) to record time-lapse, Hybrid Mode puts the camera into a "deep sleep."

It isolates the dash cam's power draw from the car, and nothing is cut or spliced, which is the thing dealers query most.

The "Sealion" Installation Challenges

The Sealion 7 is a beautiful piece of tech, but a whole-hog 2-channel (Front & Rear) install has two major hurdles:

1. The ADAS & HUD: The housing behind your mirror contains the sensors for your Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keep Assist. If you mount a camera too close, you'll cause glare or sensor errors. The camera should go on the passenger side, clear of the sensor windows but still within the wiper path.

2. The Hatch Grommet: To install the rear camera, the cable must pass through the rubber "elephant trunk" grommet at the top of the tailgate. If a DIYer just tucks the wire under the seal, your Sealion can leak when it rains. This grommet is a tight fit - it takes patience and the right tools to do it without damage.

The Warranty Myth: Will This Void My BYD Warranty?

Short answer: not on its own. Under Australian Consumer Law, BYD cannot void your whole vehicle warranty simply because you fitted an aftermarket dash cam, though it can decline a claim for a fault the installation itself caused.
