How to choose a dash cam in Australia

Three questions sort most drivers, and they are worth answering in this order.

How many cameras? A front-only dash cam is the simple budget pick and covers what is happening ahead of you. Two cameras, one on the windscreen and one on the rear glass, is what most Aussie drivers settle on, because rear-end collisions are one of the most common incident types on our roads. Compare every model on our front and rear dash cams page. A 3-channel dash cam adds a cabin view for rideshare, taxi and fleet drivers, or a bumper view on 4WD and towing setups.

How sharp? 2K is genuinely plenty for everyday driving and will read a plate in front of you at suburban speeds. Step up to a 4K dash cam when you want number plates readable well down the road, or at highway speed where a second of footage covers thirty metres of tarmac. Our shortlist of the best 4K dash cams is the quickest place to start.

Parked or driving? Most incidents happen while nobody is in the car. If you want the camera watching your vehicle in a car park or on the street overnight, budget for a hardwire kit at the same time as the camera. It is the single upgrade drivers most often wish they had bought first.

What Australian conditions do to a dash cam

A car parked in the Australian sun reaches 60-80°C inside, and that is where cheap cameras die, usually without telling you. Heat tolerance, quality capacitors and sensible thermal design matter more here than in most markets. Night driving is the other test: between unlit country highways and dim suburban streets, the sensor does the heavy lifting, and the Sony STARVIS 2 is the current benchmark for pulling detail out of the dark without the digital noise that ruins cheaper footage.

Brands we stock

We are an authorised Australian reseller for every brand on this page. VIOFO leads on picture quality and value and fills most of our best-of lists. Vantrue is strong for rideshare and cabin-camera setups. WOLFBOX owns the mirror cam category for utes, vans and anything with a loaded tray blocking the rear view. Dongar covers the plug-in power adapters, alongside our own Aussie-made inventions and a deep range of cables and replacement cameras.

Dash cam buying guides

Dash cam FAQs

How much should I spend on a dash cam in Australia?
Spend what you are comfortable with. Michael's rule of thumb: "spend what your insurance excess would be, because that is what a dash cam is designed to save you from losing." We are always happy to give you honest pros and cons for your car, your driving and how you park.

Are dash cams legal in Australia?
Yes, in every state and territory, provided the mount does not obstruct your line of sight. Recording audio in your own vehicle is generally fine too, though there are rules about sharing that footage. If you drive rideshare, read up on passenger privacy before you switch the cabin camera on.

Will a dash cam flatten my battery?
Only in parking mode, and only if it is set up poorly. A quality hardwire kit uses low-voltage cutoff to stop recording before your battery drops too far. EV and hybrid owners should look at our protection packages, which pair the right camera with a kit designed for sensitive battery management systems.

Can you install it for me?
No. We do not install cameras ourselves, but you can find someone local in our directory of independent installers. They are independent businesses, so you book and contract directly with them.

Do dash cams come with an Australian warranty?
Yes. We are an authorised Australian reseller for every brand we stock, so each camera carries its full local manufacturer warranty on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights, backed by our 30-Day No-Worries returns. No grey import gamble.
