What Makes a 4K Dash Cam Actually 4K

The sensor, not the sticker. A genuine 4K dash cam pairs a 4K recording mode with an image sensor that has the resolution to fill it, usually around 8 megapixels. Cheaper cameras record a 4K file from a smaller sensor and stretch the image, which looks acceptable in daylight and turns to mush at night. 4K Front Only, or 4K Front and Rear?

Most 4K dash cams put the 4K sensor at the front and a lower resolution camera at the back, commonly 2K or 2.5K, because the rear camera looks through tinted glass at traffic that is holding position behind you. Dual 4K systems record 4K at both ends for drivers whose main worry is the car behind. 30 or 60 Frames Per Second?

Most 4K dash cams record at 30 fps, which suits everyday driving. A 4K 60 fps camera captures twice as many frames, so a plate on a vehicle crossing your path is more likely to land in a sharp frame rather than a blurred one. The trade-off is larger files and a card that fills faster.

Memory Cards and Parking Mode on a 4K Dash Cam

4K footage is large, so card capacity matters more here than on any other camera. For driving only, 128 GB is a sensible minimum. If you run parking mode, step up to 256 GB or 512 GB of high-endurance or industrial memory cards, because parked recording adds hours of footage every day. Parking mode itself needs permanent power from a hardwire kit with low-voltage cutoff.
